Bio-metric gun safes

My wife is thinking she'd like a bio-metric gun safe. Any recommendations?

Are they considered 'legal safe storage' if you are not home, or are you better off locking it up as per usual if you are not going to be home?

I have this and I personally cosider it safe storage. There is not much you can do against a motivated thief no matter what kind of safe you use, but I'm pretty sure no one can just walk to it and grab my pistol without considerable effort. And it takes 2 seconds to open it up even in the dark. It runs on AC with a batterie backup, 8x AA batteries so it last a long time without power, like, years... There is one with a finger print scanner but I think its is a waste of time as it is just as fast with the buttons.

There is a longer version that I couldn't find but basically there is a wire he looks that on which releases the door. If you look up the full version he foes over in greater detail how it works.

Yeah I`ve seen the "longer" video. The "straining" holes he describes and goes through with the paperclip are actually the SPEAKER holes. There is a plastic cap under there with a buzzer/beeper thingy for the tones when you press buttons and the alarm when you move the box when it`s armed. Good luck getting a paperclip through. He obviously removed it first.

Anyways like I said, nothing will stop a dedicated thief. This isn't meant for theft protection it is meant for safe storage.

Here found this pic online you can even see the holes are blocked. This guy is a douche nozzle trying to scare people. Don't believe everything you see on the interwebz...

Besides there are much better ways to do it without having altered the safe first...

I have one by my bed. Not the brand shown but similar. These safes are not meant to stop theft. There simply slow it down and more to the point keep your kids off your handgun. The reality is, they give rapid access to your gun while staying within the restrictions of the Canadian Firearms Act.

OK - so it slows down access, making the owner vulnerable to attack while staying within the law. Doesn't prevent theft, just unauthorized access - you hope.

Unless it's anchored to something immoveable, the box will be stolen and opened at leisure by the thief and your azz is grass, just as it would be with any other "safe storage" method.

Internet videos are a great tutorial for would be thieves. Ain't it great ...... ?

Your question was "Are they considered safe storage?" . You got your answer, yes they are. A quick search will show you, even the biggest baddest safe will get broken into by a determined thief. Get an alarm system, a guard dog, a good neighbor, limit your time away from home and make sure it doen't look like the house is empty when your gone. Timers on lights and such. Good luck!

Safe storage is not about making it hard for criminals. Safe storage is about making life harder for you. Cut and dried. I would get the minimum to comply with the law and home content insurance to cover the losses just like anything else you own of value in this world.
It goes without saying, however, that yes, if you have children you shouldn't keep guns out and about without teaching them gun safety like my father taught me.

I got the hornady rapid safe. Early adopter lol.

I have had it for about 3ish years, its RFID, keypad, keyed with battery backup. I love it . Only holds one gun tho, so it is specialized.

It slows down access for a thief but not much for me or my wife. My best time with snap caps from the start signal is opened, loaded, racked, mounted light on in 2.02 sec in the dark. Would be slower obviously when awakened from sleep but I don't feel that I would go down that easily.

Mine is anchored through the floor to the floor joist. I would say it won't be stolen. Broken into sure but the safe will be staying.

I wouldn't touch them with a ten foot pole. Easily swiped contents and all. You better off with a good strong combination safe that's anchored to the wall and/or floor.

lol, I was just envisioning you and your wife in bed with stop watch having races.

Most of the biometric safes are something you don't want, many are easy to fool and people get locked out power issues. Mechanical is the way to go.

....a locksmith told me that 80% of his Safe business comes from responding to calls for electronic safes that will not open . He said he would not accept an electronic safe for his own use if they gave them away for free . The electronic safes just cannot be depended on .

If I were to use one for the intended purpose of having one close while sleeping...sure. Is it an all the time, round the clock safe....no. Before leaving the house, put your pistol in a real safe. Take it out when you get home and put in the bio-metric.

People who say never use one should be saying...use it right. Use it for it's intended purpose. It can keep you on the right side of the law.

Who said people were not securing their safes? Or is the only way anyone ever has used one is to sit it on the kitchen table
