The CANADIAN Ruger Gunsight Scout Discussion Thread

There's no real need for the flash hider for casual user, just look *cool*.

what!

you do NOT know what your talking about!
what happens if you are hunting at dusk and your first shot is pulled or the wind takes it and then now the Buck knows you are shooting at him, now he can see your muzzle flash and the war is on my friend!
if you had a muzzle flash hider on there he would be none the wiser and your wife wouldnt have to worry about the RCMP coming to your door to explain to her how you got ravaged by a Buck.

just saying.

(haha!)

Mark, what height Warnes are you using on the Ruger? Looks like the a pretty much perfect fit clearance wise for both the objective and the aperture (on the rail)?

love the new Magpul AICS mags, 6 round capacity. Feed great

I just got one of these used. 16 inch blued with flash suppressor. Unfortunately I just got the gun with a few extra magazines. I want to mount a scope on the receiver using the ruger ring system but I didn't get them. I put some ruger rings on them I had laying around but the scope points way to high. I can't seem to find the answer but I assume the rings are different heights, the rings I have are the same height.

What size rings do I need to mount a 3-9x40mm Burris? If they are too pricey I might just get the XS extended rail.

All m77 rings should be offset with the lower one in the front. Ruger's own rings should be numbered. I also have a set of burris ones and they come with 2 different height per set.

Thanks guys, this is my first ruger in over 20 years, I think that's how old the rings are I had laying around. I will get a proper set and get the scope mounted this spring.

So I'm just looking at the wholesale prices for 2016 from one of the big Ruger importers.

It looks like the 308/223-.556 stainless versions (laminate or composite stock) would "hit the shelves" in the MID-$1500 range and the composite/matte black models would come "just barely" under $1500.

With that being the new "price reality" would there still be interest in this model while the prices are elevated like this (note these were going for about 1K as recent as last year).

Some of the increase is due to the dollar, but a significant part is also due to Ruger jacking the price.

So what say the Scout Lovers - is this a buy anyway or maybe wait to see if things settle down first??

Well, with the prices heading up on pretty much everything I would say that they are still a buy...... but if I were a seller like you are Graham, I am not sure I would risk having too many in stock..... I fear we may be entering the age of the budget rifle.....

No way in hell these are 1500$ rifles.
And before I get dog-piled on I'm currently on my fourth scout and love the rifle to death.

I agree Superbrad, it's certainly beginning to look that way, and Sturm,Ruger Co. isn't the only party that's guilty of catering to the "plastic-fantastic" demographic. The sad fact of the matter is we enthusiasts just don't make-up enough of the market anymore. When Wal-Mart provides an order for XX,### amount of budget hunting rifles you know full well that manufacturer is going to cater to them and the rest of the product line takes a back seat in production numbers and I have a feeling that is what's happening with the Hawkeye/GSR model.

Exactly..... And that is what will be up making a scout a $1500 rifle..... Not because it is "worth it", but because with a Savage axxis hitting $600 and still selling like hotcakes, since it's the cheapest available, there is little incentive to the manufacturers to make a run of lower sellers unless they jack the price and hope the enthusiasts bite....

Yes, the "price reality" sucks this year.

I asked but maybe should have added a couple other figures to put things into perspective.

Is a Rem 700 SPS Stainless an $1100 rifle - whether it is or not, that's the price "now" - does that make the Scout worth $1500 "in that light".

Or how about a $700 Patriot (but hey, it has a factory scope) :) - Make that $840 if you want the one with the Vortex Crossfire mounted from factory.

Or maybe you are more in the mood for the "budget" Axis - $600 for the scoped model, in a camo stock it's $700 - want the black/stainless with a scope you are up to $725 or maybe the new Axis II with hardwood stock/factory scope - that comes in at $725 as well.

So maybe you say, well what about the standard M77 Hawkeye - blued/walnut - that will "only set you back" $1275, or the Stainless Varmint version, that's "only" $1450. But hey, the Ruger American (bare rifle) is still an "entry level gun", Right?? - I guess, because that will only set you back 800 bucks - before taxes of course.

Welcome to 2016 after all the mfg's upped their prices AND the dollar is still trading around 75 cents...

(and I'm not picking these prices out of the air, they are accurate as of a couple days ago from my importer sources, Korth (Ruger), REDL (Savage/Mossberg) and Big Rock (Remington/Ruger/Savage/Mossberg/TC/Weatherby)

I am more worried that the prices won;t go back down when the dollar gets better....

They certainly won't if the wholesalers are holding stock that they bought with the crappy buck. The whole industry, save maybe the mfg's work on pretty thin margins so there is not a great deal of room to start with.

I might tag an $800 (wholesale) gun for $1000 to try and stay competitive. If the wholesaler bought that with a 70 cent buck and then the dollar goes back to say 85 cents (that's a 21.4% increase in the value of the dollar) they certainly can't now drop their "wholesale price" very much because they may have been only working on a 15% margin to start with.

This (guns) is one of those items where the only way we could win would be to "always" deal in US Dollars at both the wholesale and retail level.

With the prices the way they are now I'm glad I got mine early. I don't mean to be "that guy" but I was fortunate enough to score one for around $700 at SFRC when Ryan was blowing out the 18 inch non flash-hider Canadian model. I did pay full pop on the others at $1050+tax..I didn't suffer any remorse paying full price. They are my favorite bolt guns so far.
