I can only speak for myself, but cz's bring better quality and finish. Not to mention they've already proven to be reliable.
The type 81 prototype seams like a closer relative to the sks. And those can be acquired all day long for $200 and under.
So considering this is mag fed, I'd pay $300 more to try it out. There's a potential that the first batch will be lemons, and I for one am not spending anything close to Cz price for a Type 81 that hasn't been proven.

I hope I'm wrong about this, I'd like to support anyone bringing in fresh non-res product.

Comparing any production gun price to a surplus SKS is ignorant to how things work.

This.

It's not an SKS. I don't know why people keep thinking this. It's nothing like an SKS.

The Type 81 is derived from the AK. Below is a very rough progression....

SVT-40 - SKS - AK-47 - Type 81

Of course, they will all share certain elements, but to say they are the same gun i just ignorant, as Shawn pointed out.

Lets not forget about the Cz858 gremlin

Hasn't been proven????
How is that when they have been in production for over 30 years and used in the Chinese army extensively

VZ58s certainly have a better finish and are more refined looking, but that doesn't equate as to whether the overall quality is better.

Also, the SKS is a 60+ year old surplus cast-off, if they were newly manufactured then they'd cost as much as other newly built 7.62x39 semiautos.

You also can't compare them economically.

You can get an SKS for dirt cheap because after the commies got done making millions of them, they became obsolete almost immediately overnight when the AK came along just a few years later. They then sat in crates for half a century before being resold to us as surplus, as-is.

You can't do this with more modern rifles like the T97 and T81. You have to redesign the fire controls to pass the RCMP's scrutiny and build new rifles from the ground up, at far smaller numbers than you'd see in a combloc military acquisition.

If you produced limited numbers of new SKS rifles for civilian sale, they'd be pretty expensive, too.

I'm genuinely curious as to why people would think redesigning fire controls on a stamped semi-automatic AK based platform would entail a price of a similar weapon, milled in Europe.

People are overthinking as to why the price would be so high and placing the source of the issue on Norinco's "hard efforts" at redesigning a gun they made in the millions. Either TI or some other middleman that is taking a nice slice out of the hoopla to price a piece of steel and wood thats made in China. That's my guess.

And for the record, I'm sure Norinco referenced the old blueprints on the semi T81 that was exported to the USA, so please explain why it was such a tough job for them as to warrant a higher price.

If you do not like the prices then don't buy one. Four years ago it was quoted for being in the $800 range or something like that, now add on our low dollar and it brings the price up. This rifle is also newly made. Very few have been made for the civillian market, and one of the bigest buyers of firearms aka the United States cant buy them because of the norinco ban, we are the only ones who can buy them and we are only a small number of people. All these little things factor into the cost

Some design elements were taken from the AK but the internals from the pictures and videos I have seen are different, the type 81 uses bolt hold open devices, short gas piston vs the long gas pistol the AK uses. And a couple other things.

Higher price because they've got new receivers and new bbls to make them NR, rather than being able to put them together from parts kits. Who knows how many other new parts?

From what I've seen, the design seems more kindred to the AR-180 than even close to being an SKS relative.

Doesn't mean I'm buying one (not the first run). Just tired of the same debunked talking points being chirp chirp chirped again and again...

Im also waiting, Just like the T97 this will have a price drop 6 months after initial release or when CanAm starts selling them...

I hope the production models quality is better , cause I'm going to pass at this price point . Like everyone else mentioned I'd rathe get a vz for the money . Looks like a lot of fun though hope you guys enjoy yours let us know how they shoot !
