16ga. Ammo

Crappy tire stocks it here. Far from dead IMO but I reload so it is never an issue for me
Cheers

Thanks, just slowly getting my gun/reloading room ready, wasn't sure if reloading shotgun ammo would be worth it, will see! Canammo has a sale on and I was going to order one of their 16 guage single shot rigs but never even looked before to see what ammo and price would be available!
Cheers Bob

It is worth it if you shoot 410, 28 or 16ga or shoot steel shot in any amounts
12ga and 20ga lead not so, cheaper to buy
Cheers

Federal no6 lead in 16ga are $14.29 box at CT

Remington has come out with a steel load in 16ga, $26 a box of 25, I will give it a go on ducks with the 870 I picked up in the fall.

There is lots of 16ga out there, at least as much as 28ga and 410 :), just stock up and don't throw out hulls.

Canadian tire in Nova Scotia sells typically from what I've seen #6 shot only typically federal. Ive found some #4s and #7.5s at some local shops and also have managed to find some slugs both federal and S&B. Most of what I've seen is federal although I have a box of Rio. The hardest thing to find is buckshot I've managed to find two boxes of #1 over the course of a few years. Will be picking up some steel shot this year at cabelas.

Right now 12 and 20 gauge flats are in the $75 - $100 range for 250 shells these days in Ontario. It can be cheaper to reload those gauges if you can find a deal on components. I reload 20 gauge for around $5.50 a box, but then again I have easy access to Hummasons.

Where I live Remington game loads are $9.99 to $11.99 per box. Federal game loads are around $14.99 - $16.99. I recently grabbed a flat of 'new old stock' Remington for $9.99 a box. I used to buy them at Bass Pro for $8.99 a box but I think they have gone up by $1 or 2 per box now.

Reloading 16 gauge is a little more than 12 or 20 gauge because the wads are more expensive, but I reload them for under $6 a box right now.

Federal makes a 16 gauge steel load that is generally cheaper than that.

$26 at Sail for the Remington, Federal I have only seen at a local gun shop and they want $36 a box.

I am talking about Federal Speed-shok (blue box), I know the Black Cloud stuff is pretty expensive. I've seen it for pretty cheap as $14.99 at Bass Pro and Epps in recent years. Now that I am looking around, you might be right, I see Cabela's has it at $26.99 on their website.

I use Federal Speed-shok, Kent Fasteel and Challenger for ducks and geese. All under $20 a box and just as deadly as the $36 stuff.

Looks that way, thanks for the info, will be looking into setups for reloading, I am getting a room ready for reloading antique handgun rounds and .45/9mm so hopefully I have some of the gear already.! Any body have a good recipe handy?
I just bought 2 of Canam's 16 guage shotties, $100 each!! But you get a free $50 stun Batton with each so I bit on it!! I wanted the stun Batton's so for $50 more!! It will be fun. How much less kick do the 16 have over the 12 ga. If any?

Recoil depends on the load (ounces of shot, velocity, etc.) and gun fit.

It's pretty much impossible to find 'target' load for 16 gauge. I am not even sure anyone makes it and if they did I'd say it would be a European manufacturer as 16 gauge is popular in the UK for example. The invention of 3" 20 gauge chamber and Skeet really sealed the fate of 16 gauge in North America. Now, plenty of people make 'game loads' for the 16 gauge and that is what is readily available.

For Sporting Clays or Skeet, I use Remington Game Loads in #7.5 or #8 and Federal Game-Shok in #7.5 or #8. Remington loads are usually a few dollars cheaper than the Federal loads.

I use the Federal Game-Shok loads in #6 for hunting. I prefer Federal because I feel like they have less recoil but they are usually $4 - 5 more per box.

Save all you hulls since both can be reloaded. You can also order new Cheddite 16 gauge hulls if you just want to do your own reloads without having to buy factory ammunition. I think you can get those hulls from Wil Bilozir as he imports BPI products.

You are able to find Kent Fasteel in 16ga? Challenger in 16ga?

Federal was $36/box locally, I wish I was near Orillia.

The only Kent non-tox in 16ga I see is Bismuth.

Challenger does not have any 16ga loaded at all.

No sorry. I guess I implied that, didn't I? I should have said that is what I use in my 12 and 20 gauge.

Kent does make a Bismuth load in #5 and #6. I don't know how much it is, but I remember that a case of their Tungsten Upland load was something around $400 for 100 rounds.

I was thinking that was where you were coming from.

If I could get steel for my 16ga at $15 a box I would be killing a lot of ducks and geese with it.

I still have a box of Bismuth shot, #4, back before they were bought. I used to tuck a few into my pack and take them to the ponds to try to jump shoot ducks but I never did take a shot with that particular load.

So far I have seen Fed and Rem steel in 16ga, #2 and #4 only. I have also found slugs and every shot size from SG down to #9 but most is at gun shows. Factory made you are looking at #4, #6, #7.5, #1 buck if you are really lucky and foster slugs, at least from American manufacturers.

1 1/4oz #6 in 16ga drops a turkey like a ton of bricks with the right gun :)

I guess you could call around and see who has those Federal at what prices. Sometimes you can buy something uncommon like that for a cheap price because it has been sitting for a long time and it hasn't been reordered which means the price hasn't changed. That's how I got a lot of my 16 gauge loads actually.

Remington makes a 16 gauge Foster type load and you can buy them anywhere. I just took a look on Cabela's website and they are priced at $7.99 presently.

I use the 1 oz Federal Game-Shok in #6 or CIL Paperhull in #6. Are those 1-1/4 oz loads pheasant loads or just heavy game loads?

CTC in Bedford had 2 boxes of #6 2 3/4 fed blue box, so I got those,, I will keep checking around to see who has case lots, might as well see if a case is cheaper!

I picked up three boxes of federal #6 game loads at Cabelas for $9.99. They were on sale, and I grabbed the same shells in .410 for $11.99. They are around, but reloading would-be the route to go if you shoot a lot.
