The New SKS build - warning, Tacticoolishness

Well Here is the build thus far, all the cosmetics and furniture is on, Barrel will be shortened down to about 18.7 - 18.8 Inches. I'd like to find a better optic to go on it maybe a set of flip up sights. Can't wait to try it out, the only problem i had was the top hand guard that covers the gas piston won't fit because of the built in rails on the top. I am not sure if that will affect anything when firing the rifle. I tried looking for anyone who has tried but i can't find anything.

Thus far build is Tapco SKS stock with ATI adjustable But stock with cheek comb with UTG quad rail, with a Matador sks shell deflector/rail and an IMI defense fore grip.

That doesn`t look too bad really.But there are those who are gonna get all up in your face for doing this to an SKS, although I could never figure out why they get so upset ?

I have a good number of Chinese and Russian ,most in original state, one with a TAPCO dressup (shoots very well too) one turned into a Dragunov style and a Russian turned into an AK look alike.Why did I do that to those 3 ?

Because I could !!!! But being into woodworking and metal working ,the Dragunov and AK projects were to see if I could pull it off and learn some new skills.It worked and I like `em......and that`s what counts...right !!

Cheers and enjoy shooting your SKS ,they are fun to shoot alright.

Looks great! I built one similar. I just wanted a non-restricted mean looking rifle that shot the cases and cases of ammo I have around here. It's also a great toy to hand new comers to shooting and tell them they can get an SKS for $200. Their faces light up. It's all trickery to get more people into shooting. ;)

I removed the gas tube cover all together to install the quadrail. Every thread is better with pics so here's some of my Tacticool build.

I liked this optic system only because it allows me to use the super quick stripper clips to reload.

The pressure switch actuated flashlight also has a laser function but it's not the brightest in daylight.

Too much. lol

I think my buddy is up to about $700 for his SKS, between the original rifle, a stock, a foregrip, a bipod, a pair of duckbill detachable mags, and a witt muzzle brake. And he still has to get an optic mount of some sort, plus he wants to get the magazine adapter for 10-round XCR pistol mags... Which collectively would bring the grand total to well over $1000, and thats without any XCR mags yet or an optic. lol

Yuppers, including cost of original rifle it would be close to that much. I think mine was right around $650 or so probably going to go up again as well.

I just got a nice 1952 that is being refinished and staying original with an extended mag. I'll post pics of them side by side when shes done.
 
When I fitted my ATI stock there was a pronounced "wow" in the stock that required force to get it to lock up. But once it is there, things don't move. The other problem with the ATI is the little screws for the pistol grip (yeah!) seem easy to strip in the main body of the stock. Be careful when removing them.

As for the OP's issue with the gas tube and piston, remember you are adding parts to something that was built years ago and far away. Modern makers have to adapt their products to fit every SKS, and your might not necessarily be the exact same as the sample they used. If the parts are plastic, use heat to move them. If the parts are steel, use files to carefully remove sufficient material to get things in the right places.

OK I saw a guys with one at Stittsville today and I think he thought I was spying on him, but I want one too.

Its, not so much that it would not fit between the brakets of the gas tube where the upper handguard is. its that the quad rail won't fit with the handguard there because of the rail on the tapco hand guard (not easily removable). I just wonder if it is safe to shoot without the hand guard there and the gas tube exposed. I can't see there being an issue but i want to make sure.

Really, the only option is to remove the hand guard. It's actually not all that hard. You just need a punch and a hammer and a nail. There's lots of youtube vids on how to replace the hand guard on an SKS. You'll just need to assemble it again without a replacement hand guard as the quad rail will serve that purpose now.

As for leaving it off, I wouldn't recommend that. It will blow gasses back at your face every time you shoot it and render your SKS a single action bolt gun instead of a semi-auto. Which is completely counter productive to the Tacticool function of the rifle.

I do have the quad rail over top of the gas tube where the hand guard used to be. The gas tube assembly is all there and together the only part that is missing is just the hand guard.
but from what i understand of your post is that it will be safe to shoot.

Oh. Yes indeed. If the tube is assembled properly the quad rail will protect your hand and anything else from getting burned.
