I'm not trying to be a smart ass or critical,chuck,but,I'm curious why you ordered the Guide gun instead of the Hawkeye African if you werent' happy with the finish? You could always send it back and re-order,right? I'm a big,big fan of Ruger. I have three M77's.

I wanted stainless and the finish is an easy fix.
 
I think you had a lemon. The 416 I had cycled very well and shot about as good as one could hope. But the hogue stocks are garbage in my opinion

The purpose of the barrel band is to prevent a stock mounted swing swivel from getting jammed into your hand on heavy recoiling rifles.

That is my understanding. I had to remove the stud from my H&R .45-70 for that very reason. Every time I squeezed the trigger the damn stud drove into my index finger.
I also own a M77 in .375 Ruger that has the barrel band, and it recoils enough that I'm quite sure it would have bit me like the little H&R used to.
 
I have heard about that problem too.
With a real short forend maybe? It has never happened to me, and can't imagine how it would on a full size rifle.
