First Focal Plane VS Second Focal Plane

I just took some, will post later. Can't do it from this damn app.

My 2 FFP Bushies both lose the bottom of the G2 reticle at full power. I'll check my vortex later.

I bet it all has to do with the optic's design.

Are there any apples to apples comparisons, FFP vs 2FP in the same model?? The innards of FFP vs SFP are quite different, no??

BTW, I think calling it 2FP vs SFP is a good idea. My simple mind mixes them up at times....

Buuuuutttt....you can see the entire reticle at full/true ranging power on a 2FP. That's my point. On an FFP you lose the bottom part of the reticle.

I own both as well.

I don't see any misleading info on this thread, from me or anyone else.

It must depend on your scope. My Bushnell LRHS FFP has 8 mils of hold-over in the reticle and you don't lose any of it at maximum zoom.

I have slowly gone over to FFP for target / hunting scopes over the years

For me, its for holdovers at any power .

Lots of guys will flame me for this, trying to mil for range when hunting seldom works as advertised

If you are reaching out that far , an range estimation error trying to mil a "guesstimated " size animal , not to mention the time it takes seldom is conducive for real world hunting

Not sure how far you plan to reach out, but if you look at ballistic table, you can clearly see the dope for example, between 500 and 525 yards is significant . Most guys will not be able to mil a animal for range that accurately and quickly

Real world example, I watched my whitetail last year for 2 hours . He popped out at least 5 different times at various locations between . Way easier to hit him with laser rangfinder and just hold over or dial come ups IMO

Had a Nightforce 5-22X 2ndFP with NR-R2 recticle. Problem is to use this recticle for holdovers , its calibration is at 22X which is way to high power most of the time for hunting

Went with FFP and never looked back

I do play around ranging with recticle when shooting gongs / targets unknown distance for practice , but IMO in most hunting situations I generally have more pressing things to figure out, so easier to use laser

When shooting unknown distance gongs / targets its nice to be able to spot buddy with mil recticle at any power and call his shots ( scope with MRAD adjustments makes life easy....no idea why anyone would want mil recticle with MOA adjustments ! )

Reticle Thickness

Again, different if you are shooting paper for wee groups, but having used FFP ( 4 different reticles of various thicknesses ) I never think that recticle is covering too much (especially hunting )

You need to take it out and play in the field ...looking through scope in shop won't give you best idea

Often and dusk / dawn I appreciate the heavier reticle .

Having said that, when its that dark , you are seldom at max power anyways so its a moot point

No flame here, I have to agree with you on the range estimation when hunting at long distances. In that situation the laser measured distance is really the best way to go as you need an accurate value to really take those kind of shots.

Agree fully about the ability to range using a reticle.

When 25 yards can mean 10" of drop, a medium elk vs a large elk can mean a miss vs a hit.

I think reticle ranging is a skill that most of us wannabes read about snd watch Bradley Cooper and Mark Wahlberg do on movies. It's a very cool skill, but I think my Leica will be doing that work for me.....

Now, the value of your hashmarks being true at all mags is impt to me for hunting.

I can see all my dots at all magnification, but the thicker posts on the edge of the reticle that don't have any dots on them seem to shrink if that's what you mean.

Here are the pics. I lose the entire bottom line of the 10mil line, and some of the 8mil at full power..... this is on my 3.5-21. I'll check the 4.5-30.

F-ing hell.

I have no idea how to flip those.....but you get the point.

......or maybe this is the chance for you all to explain why my holdovers never work.....

I had bushnell AR optics 1-4 in ffp and they didn't have this issue but were crap scopes. I'm using Weaver Tacticals in 1-5x24 CIRT and 3-15x50 EMDR. Which Bushnell model do you have?

I have:

Bushnell DMR 3.5-21 - can barely see the 8mil horizontal line at 21x

Bushnell XRS 4.5-30 - can only see the 5mil and up horiz line at 30x, 6-10 lines are gonzo....

Vortex PST 2.5-10x32 - I can see the entire reticle at 10x

Elite Tactical ERS 3.5-21x 50mm , just read some reviews and they confirm at higher magnification you loose you're lower reticle mils (this was on sniper central). Interestingly enough, I've never seen this in other designs, live and learn I guess. The FOV at that magnification must be awfully small.
