sucks having old eyes.

I did 2 things - got a pair of single-vision lenses for hunting and shooting. Progressives caused a lot of issues. then, I put Firesights on pretty well everything I have with open sights. That helped a lot. I am now able to shoot almost as well with sights as with a scope. The big debate I'm having now is whether to leave my Ranch Hand as is or put Firesights on it as well. I'll try the RH tomorrow (weather permitting) and see.

Less coffee and try a red dot? If you can see well at a distance a red dot works like a champ. The optics of the red dot makes your eye think that the dot is out there at "infinity" so your distance vision is what counts even though the red dot unit is in close to you. A scope does the same thing when we adjust the back focus to see the lines more clearly.

But this is the black powder and antiques forum and I have to say that a red dot on a flint pistol or rifle is going to draw some odd looks.... :d

Thanks for the suggestion, it makes perfect sense the way you explained it. Ive never been a fan of scopes on my pistols, but I think I'll give this a try. I'm pretty sure I have a TRS25 sitting here somewhere, if I can find a mount to get it installed on my 1911, I'll give it a go.

I'm going to look into the Firesights to see if it helps thanks Papa

Before I had cataract surgery, there were two things which I found helped. The first was that I shoot a long barreled muzzle loader and putting the rear sight about 14" down the barrel made it a bit easier to focus both the sights and the target. Also I use a pistol type sight on my gun ; in other words a flat topped square notch at the back and a flat topped post in the front. As my eyes continued to age, I have some "computer glasses" made which focused at about 36 - 40". It gave me 100% vision of the sights and about 95% vision of the target out to 75 - 100 yards. My eyes continued to age, with my right eye in particular being quite foggy and cataract surgery cleared that up completely and while I still need a weak prescription for 100% vision, my vision is clear and sharp. I intend to get another pair of glasses that focus around 3 feet or so which in addition to being able to see both my computer monitor and writing close to me, will probably give me better vision of my sights and still retain fairly good vision of the target

cheers mooncoon

I just started using progressive glasses a few weeks ago, they help but are not perfect, I was told that there may be a surgical procedure to help and I'll look into that. I also found that wearing my old glasses and having 100% vision at the sights gave me almost no vision at a 100 yard target. I couldn't see the bullseye at all while looking through the sights. Scopes have fixed most of that for me, but some of my rifles have been put into semi retirement because they only have irons.

For a while I had a little Henry rimfire with Firesights on it. If I used the bright dots to line up the sights I have to say that I was able to get by without as clear a rear sight image. It's not as good as a proper square corner slight picture but better than just a fuzzy fog of a rear sight image.

A buddy I shoot cowboy action with has to use pretty strong readers to even see his fingernails held out at arm's length. He played with different options for his lever rifle sights and ended up using 1.25x reading safety glasses where to read a book or menu he normally uses 2.5 or 3.0x. This slight correction let him see the targets "well enough" and see the sights "well enough". He actually does pretty well although if there is a lack of color contrast or lots of dappled shadow in the target area he sometimes "loses" the target for a few seconds here and there.

I wonder if we made up some red dots in cast bronze that use a candle for the light source instead of an LED if the black powder folks would allow that for mountain man events? :d

I shoot a lot of Cowboy Action and since any thing but a traditional style sight is illegal for completion I've started to use the Sure Hit Sights ( http://www. slickmagicguns.com/SureHitSights.html ) on all my guns. While they are not designed for pinpoint accuracy they work great at CAS ranges and in fact the medium size on the rifle works for me out to about 100 yards on targets in the 6-8" size.

Broke down and bought a period correct Malcom scope for my Rolling Block, impatiently waiting for it's arrival. I really hope this works, these scopes are certainly not cheap.

We expect nice photos of it all mounted or expect the angry mob with torches and pitchforks.... :d

Update. It's finally here, was ordered in December. Looks crystal clear, nice thin reticle. Can't wait to get out and develop the numbers to make this beauty really sing.

I'll post a range report once I get out to try this.

PS. Sorry to spoil your fun, BCR.
