lets see your thick bush guns!

A few years ago I was looking into the 50 Alaskan ballistics with plans on getting a Marlin 1895 done up in one.

I came to the conclusion the 50 Alaskan was so minutely different in performance to a 45-70 with only a .042" diameter increase and minimal performance if any increase that I decided to stick with 45-70's.

The .458" bullets even penetrated further than the 50's.

50 AK in a single shot or bolt would be a different beast I imagine; with higher acceptable pressures and a variety of 510 bullets.

0.42'' diameter is nothing to scoff at; surface area increases exponentially as the 375 fans always bring up when comparing it to the .338

Plus I need a true 50 cal now that I have the pistol version...

As thick bush of guns as they come, what they were purpose bred and made for, to hunt stuffer meaner than we have up close in the jesse. The .470 Nitro first from right is Douglas', and the .505 Gibbs RSM is stickhunter's. Left to right, .450 Rigby, .505 Gibbs, .470 Nitro, .375 H&H.

It's weird. I have absolutely no use for any of those beautiful rifles (or any of their type, for that matter) but want all of them. Very, very much. Thanks for posting them Ardent.

^handled a 505 gibbs CZ today; what a beast.

Is that a custom job in the RSM?

Yes, the 505 Gibbs was a rebore of a 416 Rigby RSM by Steve Holborn. He opened up the bolt face and also extended the bottom metal to fit 3 in the box.

Great picture, Ardent --- always enjoy seeing those rifles together.

This picture really puts the 505 Gibbs in perspective --- the 30-30 shell drops nicely inside:

Ardent, here's another one that you should try out when you're next in Victoria --- my Martini & Hagn 416 Ruger, built on a Santa Barbara M98 action. Sorry about the fuzzy first picture --- with sunnier days, I'll get it outside soon for some new photos:

Another another perspective --- 505 Gibbs on left, 416 Ruger on right:

I only own one centerfire rifle which is a Santa Barbara M1000 in 7x57 Mauser. I have a Bushnell Scopechief IV 1.5-4.5x25mm on it. It is pretty ugly but it is a heck of a shooter with factory 140 gr Remington Core-Lokt.

And, I opened this post with a lie. I forgot I own a sporterized Lee Enfield No. 4 MK. 1 in 303 British. It has a Bushnell Sharpshooter 3-9x32mm on it. I bought it so my brother could come deer hunting with us last fall.

There is nothing ugly about that rifle, and it shoots well to boot.

A lot of people forget what a hunting rifle is for. The business end is where it is at.

Yeah, this rifle is a great shooter actually. Under 1" at 100 yards with factory Remington Core-lokt's is typical for this rifle if I do my part.
I just feel like it would be nice to spend some money and fix up the stock or get the gun re-blued. When you bought a Santa Barbara the stock came unfinished with a checkering tool. You'd hand check it to your liking and then stain it. On the other hand, it has character.

Why bang-flop when you can bang-splat?

It does seem overkill, but there's a certain allure to me to use the rifle on an Island blacktail (once I figure out how to find them outside the city limits!). I have a 50 cal paper patch mould that drops a 500gr bullet, that would make a nice moderate load. I suspect that pretty much any ammunition is likely to drill a 50 cal hole right through a small deer and actually not upset much of the meat.

That being said, my original goal with that rifle was to use it for a bison hunt in the Yukon. I think that would bring a smile to my face.

You and my late Brother would have made great hunting partners.
He was an avid Bison hunter in the Yukon and filled his tags exclusively with rifles he had built, almost all on Enfield 17s or P 14s.
A 500 Jeffery, 460 Weatherby, 416 Rigby, and a 404 Jeffery were his idea of adequate for Bison.
Those rifles accounted for one shot kills for him..... no surprise and the part he liked the best was minimal meat damage with them..
