ATRS Modern hunter specs, pics and range reports

Paid for my 6.5CM yesterday, pretty pumped. :)

My 6.5CM light barrel has bin ready for quite a while I'm Holding out to do a Weight comparison befor I send ATRS my old upper for re-barreling
With MH and hopefully MV it's going to be a interesting hunting season this year

Can you shoot surplus 308 through these? Will it damage anything in the rifle?

As stated in all of the threads surrounding the Modern Hunter, the hammer spring weight is much lighter being as it is a single stage match trigger with a 4lb pull weight than what is typically found in standard AR style rifles. as a consequence there is a high probability that you will have large numbers of light firing pin strikes on surplus ammo due to the fact that almost all of the cheap surplus ammo has hard cup primers as it is intended for use in machine guns, rather than high tolerance precision rifles.
The use of decent surplus ammo will NOT damage the rifle, just probably won't light up the primers consistently, which I want to point out is NOT a rifle problem but an ammo problem.
If your intent is to shoot crap ammo you would be better to buy a mil-surp or battle style rifle.

Good to hear decent surplus ammo can be used in a "precision" barrel.

After the precision shooting I like to blast at least a box of NORC 308 ammo at all the abandon clays; nothing like reactive targets. 40c a shoot with NORCs, buck+ for my handloads, both do same job at clays.

Yep if you have a Norinco M14 thy work grate with surplus ammo
I shot cheep 308 in my Norinco m14 but would not shoot it in a MH
I think of a m14 as a do everything rifle
To me the MH is a specialize hunting rifle and needs a specielize ammo

Hirtenberger is quality surplus, my AR, FNAR and many more are very accurate with them, sure the MH would crave on them... JP.

I have one of the first 75 Modern Hunters, it's a 243 win that I specced out as a target rifle. 24" medium barrel and full PRS stock, 1:8 twist barrel so I could shoot the heavy 6mm bullets. It's been a long journey to get here but I've got it shooting well now and took it to the ORA Precision Rifle competition at Connaught last weekend. My partner and I managed to get 2nd place overall, with many high scores and top score at 600m deliberate. This is a testament to the potential of these rifles, as I was competing with some seriously nice bolt guns with some top notch shooters driving them.

Here's a link to the scores if anyone is interested http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1376419-ORA-Precision-Connaught-May-7-8th

As you can see we fell apart a bit at 700m and 800m, but that's user error (need more practise wind reading- especially at Connaught!). We could see most of the shots landing in a nice horizontal line across the target.

Unfortunately there is always a downside. I just upgraded to a JP Silent Captured Spring System, and am now having many cycling failures. The gun never did this with the buffer system, seems like it's short stroking as brass is falling maybe 12" from the gun. I have full confidence once this is worked out, this will be a great rifle for these competitions. On a number of matches I had to make up shots due to the cycling problems - despite the stress it's strangely satisfying double tapping movers at 400m!

Awesome, Congratulations on 2nd place! Keep us posted with your switch over to the JP Silent Captured Spring, I switched my own over quite a while back and it's been a solid performer.

Just got my MH in 6.5CM with a Proof Research barrel. I will post better photos when I get a scope mounted; not sure what I want, I would like an S&B 3-20 Ultrashort. First couple observations; lighter than I thought it would be, nicely balanced, excellent fit and finish, and the trigger is nice. I have a Caldwell brass catcher and I will also put an Atlas monopod on the PRS.

Congrats! That's something to be proud of. Thanks for the great review as well. I've been on the fence about ordering a rifle like this. Reading reviews like this is tipping me towards placing an order.

Congratulations on you and you're shooting partners excellent marksmanship.

It's really great to see what a Modern Hunter is capable of (in a competition against bolt action rifles no less) once Zeroed-In and in experienced hands.

Cheers D
