I been casting for a few years now from black powder to centerfire and pistol. I gave the shotgun slug a go with both Lee & Lyman slugs but never found an accurate load. But buckshot on the other hand I'm sure I can get a good group (spread). After all a 3" load of 00 Buck is what I used to harvest a nice w.t. buck last fall, so this got me to thinking why not just cast my own. I do have a Lee .32 cal round ball mold for my flintlock squirrel gun but it only casts two at a time.
I read an article in Handloader a while back on the Lee mold and now I want to give it a shot. I have a couple pounds of pistol/shotgun powder to use and plenty of wads and hulls. My buckshot will be cast from wheel wts and water dropped but I might give some pure lead water dropped a try too and see which shoots best.
Anyone here cast there own buckshot with the Lee? What loads have worked well for you?
Thx in advance

I'm hoping to cast some 00 buchshot in the near future. Will also be my first venture into reloading shotshells.

Will be watching this thread to see what works for others.

I have lots of wads, Federal, Rem and Win. red, yellow & white.
As long as I can get a good speed and pattern and lethal humane killing distances with my load I'll be happy.

Fingers284- I don't think you can hunt with a cannon lol

I have one and reload buckshot(mostly for gravel pit fun) I fine the Lee mold works but have trouble with proper fill sometimes I get 18 balls sometimes i get 3.

Any tricks of the trade out there ?

It can take quite a while to get the Lee mold up to temp. I find that once it starts casting well I need to keep a pretty rapid pace to keep it going. Nothing dangerously fast but can't be chatting or distracted while doing it (shouldn't be regardless of safety's sake).

LOL..Don't plan on "hunting" the ol' girl (it weights in at around 500 lbs) but I do plan on "pattern testing" her from the yard out 2-300 yrds into the adjoining grain field....if there happens to be 1500-2000 of those barley stealing- swath stomping- field ruining feathered vermin out there just on the day I decide to "test"...sucks to be them I guess.

Yea Thinking your right. I need a new pot as mine is a home done job and think its not getting hot enough to keep the big molds running. it does 2 cavity molds fine

Get a cheap hot plate from Canadian Tire and preheat the mold with it. Makes casting so much easier with any mold. Won't take long to get a feel for how hot you need to preheat and pretty soon you will be casting keepers from your first pour. I bought the cheapest one with the normal coiled element so I ground the points off a 7 1/4" fine saw blade and use it as a heat plate to even out the heat to the mold.

excellent Idea thanks. Ill hit up Canadian Tire and drop by my rural dump as they have a share shed that people drop off usable items such as hot plates.
