Hey all.
Looking to get my first 308.
Like the feel of a Remington 700 Tactical and Tikka CTR .
Has to be a .308.
Any opinions on these two models or suggestions for something more appropriate .
Will be shooting mostly 100 yards, possibly up to 300.
Looking to shoot the rifle as stock with a bipod.
Shooting for fun now, may want to compete in another year or so...
Thanks again .

I think either will serve you well and be accurate.
I would give the advantage to the 700, mainly due to more options of after market and upgrades available.
Out of the box, I would give the advantage to the Tikka.

Either would suit your needs. Endless parts for the 700 but the tikka probably would be great out of the box. I personally have a savage 10 fcp-sr in 308 and a 700 in 223 and my next rifle will be a 700 in 243.....

Both are great and own both. For 100-300 no real difference in performance and will be mostly shooter skills. Of the two, I prefer the Ctr. Another great option is the savage 10 tr. superb value and great performer.

Luv my CTR in 260Rem. Went to a lot of trouble getting 260, moving away from 308.

OP: Why does it have to be a 308?

.308 due to peer pressure :)
My shooting buddies all shoot .308, so I figured it would help with getting into reloading as well.
Yes, they all have 700's as well, that's why the 700 is on the list.
Thanks.

I've owned both, only the 700's remain mostly to simplify parts on hand. They are both great. If you end up with the 700 try 200-208 bullets and cfe 223, the Internet says they are not supposed to shoot in the 1-12 twist but I know better. Deadly accurate, the high BC gives advantage at 600 over 165-175's. Good luck

I shot a 700 for years, loved it regardless of what others said. But this early Spring I bought a Tikka CTR in .308, put a fixed 10x scope on it. I can honestly say that the CTR is by far the best rifle I have ever owned. So impressed with it's buttery smooth action, accuracy right out of the box, 1/12 twist, light, and so forth. Fills every role I'd need it to, great hunting rig as well as something I can comfortably get out to 500 yards at our range (I know it's capable of much more, but I'm not)
I see alot of 700 rifles on the EE, which I can't explain, unless people eventually upgrade to another platform. I always wanted an M40 clone, so pretty fond of the 700 platform, and glad I experienced it. But between the two, a CTR all the way!
Take care.

Actually, this is another good option!! I sold my RPR ONLY because I could only have one rifle, and wanted something for hunting and longer range. The RPR in .308 was a fantastic setup as well, only regret with mine was I did not push the distance further before I had to let it go.

Go Ruger Precision Rifle. If you take a rem 700 and pimp it, the overall cost will be higher than what the Ruger costs.

CTR is 7.5lbs, RPR is 10.9lbs. Of course weight goes out the window the second you pimp it with pounds of fat :)

The CTR at 7.5lbs is comfortable to shoot in 260 without a muzzle break, feels the same as my TRG 22 in 308 with a muzzle.

I have a Remington 700 (the VLS model). Have had it for fifteen years or more. Shoots great. But beware of the reliability of Remingtons these days. Are you going to be buying locally so you can get an idea of the quality of the rifle you are going to purchase? Or are you buying online? Tikka has a great reputation for quality. I have one T-3 and it is fantastic.

Sorry but I have to high jack my own thread ....
A buddy just let me know that the LGS has a Savage 10TR in .308 which fits in my price range,,,,,
Any opinions now that a third option has been added.
Thanks again for everyone's input.

Buy the Tikka or the RPR. Just because there are alot of something (M700s) doesn't mean its the right choice. I love my M700 but it is for sure not the end all and be all of rifles.

If I remember correctly, your RPR ran pretty well while a lot of the customs did not.

It ran really well. I've had trued and rebarreled 700's and there is nothing wrong with that. I would have ran my insite .308 but I blew it up. But that's another story.

Savages can shoot as well. The last savage I had was a 110 that I was going to build on. It was a cheap package gun with a weaver scope. I did a couple loads with it, and I got under inch groups. I was floored. The rifle with the package rings and scope cost $475. I still don't know why I sold it. Anyway, I didn't take any pictures, but I ran a box of federal 100gr pointed soft points through the rpr to see what it would do, and the group was 0.5 to 0.75. I should taken pictures or video, but I was floored. And for competition, I cycled the thing very quick. Target acquisition was slow, but that was my fault for a lack of dry firing practice under timed conditions.

Not sure who has them in stock.

The thing that bugs me about the tikka's are their recoil lug. I prefer one solid piece of steel, like the surgeon, defiance, or winchester action. The winchester doesn't have an integral pic rail though, but it is much cheaper to buy a featherweight, butcher it, and build on it from there. The only drawback to the winchester though is the mauser action that probably shouldn't be top loaded on single rounds, they should be loaded from the mag only.

What I like about the tikka's is that they generally shoot very well, have a great stock trigger and the bolt locks on safe; if you're hunting or carrying the thing, your bolt could open and spill out rounds, or worse, chamber one when you think it is empty. Although, it is not that big of a deal to some, I just prefer a locking bolt for hunting scenario's. Also, I do believe, when compared to a rem 700, the barrel threads on the tikka are cut longer into the action (longer tenon threads, if I am correct?), giving a better grip on the barrel. I don't know if that's a big deal, but if you're comparing them, it's something to think about.
