Your "perfect" antelope gun

For a retirement gift hunt, my Daughter & Son In Law took me for an Antelope hunt on draw in southern Alberta. From what I have available, a Schultz & Larsen in 7x61 S&H 'got the call'. Don't know why that was my choice ;) other than it was the 7x61's 'turn'.

Most likely a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.

We did well. Mine ;) is the 'cute' one in the middle:p. Great guides, great partners and a great experience.
Wow, those are tremendous Pronghorns!!

I grew up in rural Alberta. I'd use this. Its a 1966 Sako Forester in .243. With an old 4X Swarovski scope it will put three shots into a 3/8 in. group at 100 yards using discount brand factory ammo. And the trigger does break like an icicle.

By the way, I've seen antelope as far north as Innisfail (just south of Red Deer) and about a decade ago a pair wintered near Ponoka (that's way north of Red Deer).

I belted mine at 303 yds with a 270 shooting Nitrex 130 grain ammo (which they don't make anymore which in my opinion is a huge mistake) that was exiting the barrel at 3100 fps.

I would still use a 270 if I was going again

I shot mine with a 7 RM, my father used a 25-06. If I was picking a rifle based on a pronghorn hunt today it would be a 6mm-06.
In fact we (My father and I) both have enough priority to draw this year, but will most likely wait a year or two..... which will give me time to build another 6mm-06.

My "perfect" antelope rifle is a Sako AV Finnbear .25-06 with Leupold 3.5-10x. I used a 120 grain Nosler PT for this one, but 100 grain bullets are probably a better choice. Accurate, flat shooting, deadly.

I am old enough to have hunted when Antelope draws were easy to get and some years additional non-trophy licenses could be purchased. I probably have shot 15 bucks and does maybe more. Most of mine were shot with a .257 Roberts Ruger M77 on a long action and magazine that permitted seating the bullets way out and using heavier than book loads.

I used mostly 100 gr. Hornady spire points, under 200 yds bang flops were the usual. I shot a few with a .300 Win mag and 180 Partions, it killed no faster except at longer ranges. Antelope is my second favorite wild meat, next to Big Horn.

I used my Ruger MKII in 6.5 x 55 for mine, and my wife used it for hers the following year. 129 gr handloads if I remember correctly.

Did the trick on both with minimal meat loss. Should be getting close for the draw again, maybe this year!

One of my favorite hunts ever, love the desert.

My first Antelope tag was filled with a 303 British, my last with a 375 H&H and in between a 270 Winchester.
My hunting mentor / partner at the time used a Remington pump ( mod. 141 ? ) in 35 Remington as his only hunting rifle and took some really nice Pronghorn with it.
Keep in mind that this was back in the early 1960s and Antelope were really plentiful then compared to now..

Also late 50's for me and .303 British did the trick...

Left hand AV Sako, 25/06.
85gr. Ballistic Tips, at warp 9.
420yds.

25" of RKS gain twist barrel.

Now that's a LH beauty!!!!!! I have a LH tikka m65 deluxe in 300 win mag. If I can ever find one in 270/25-06/30-06 i would probably buy it on the spot without hesitation, especially in a 270. I just can't stand any of the new LH guns. "They don't make them like they used to" is a damn true statement!
