Elk/Deer Combo Gun

I think you've got the loudenboomen figured out.

I'd get a stainless T3 while they're on sale, add a 3-9 VX2, and done.

I'd also go 270. Something to be said for "ammo everywhere".

I've been looking for a smaller gun for whitetail and mule deer/elk hunting so as not to destroy all the good parts of a whitetail deer. Would be good for target shooting also (not long range).

I'm not sure where people get the idea that they can "destroy all the good parts" when you do ANY lung/boiler maker shot?

I'm thinking that some people take the animal in for butchering rather than doing it themselves, and they don't understand there is little to no meat going to waste. Even on a big Alberta Whitetail the front shoulder is only two inches wide and half of that is bone and sinew. I actually try to aim for the front leg so I don't have a thru and thru shot and end up chasing a runner for hundreds of meters before it dies. There is no meat on the ribs and even if the leg/shoulder is untouched there is only grind and sausage meat rather than any actual cuts.

I like to use a heavy bullet such as a 180gr to blast that bugger to kingdom come and watch it drop on the spot. Unless you hit above the spine there is nothing going to waste worth mentioning.

A lot of good thinking there. Even if you blow through both shoulders on a deer, you've wasted roughly one roll of sausage meat while guaranteeing a down animal.

Still a lot of overthinking going on when it comes to this, a 270 bullet through the rump of any critter is going to wreck a lot of good meat. As will a 338. Etc etc.

I butcher my own game.

I'm pretty sure a magnum velocity .338 bullet is going to result in more bloodshot meat than a 7x57.

The brisket can be used for more than grind as can the leg.

If meat damage doesn't exist unless you shoot a deer in the ass why is the .338 not a popular deer round?

We appear to have a lot of guys who have never shot an Elk giving Elk rifle advice. :)

I have not went Elk hunting I'm going to do this fall on Haida Gwaii now that I figerd out wear there hiding
I going to use a ATRS modern hunter for Roosevelt Elk the bush is thick and shoots under 100 yards
If I was hunting on the mainland hunting Rocky Mountain elk 6.5CM upper would be the one I would use
I will use the 338 on the odd deer but just head shot but planing on using the new ATRS Modern Varmater on deer
Don't know if I will like hunting with the black rifles but I'm going to try it out this year
if for sum reason I don't like it I will go back to using my good old T/C prohunter 308 /223 and my 30-06

I wouldn't do any of that messing around. Work up a load and shoot everything with said load. Get to know exactly how it preforms at all distances instead of messing with everything for different animals.

You do it your way, I'll do it mine. :)
One good load in the 7mm RM would certainly be fine, but I like messing around with different loads, and I know exactly how they shoot.

Between the blinkers works as well but it is sometimes more difficult to make and if you do make the shot my opinion is that it "kills to quickly", the animals heart stops instantly leaving the meat all blood filled...much better meat with a body shot that the chest cavity has a couple gallons of blood drained into it.

Thank you for this post.

Something I have never thought about clearly.

I believe when in doubt grab a 30-06
30-06 and 308 is the most versatile rifle you can own if you need a do everything rifle
Every Hunter should have at least one 30-06 or 308

You're from Ontario. Where have you been able to hunt Elk? It might be nice for others to see some opportunities you have had.

Well, hopefully elk becomes a viable hunt here soon, as thy are taking off....

And, admittedly I have limited elk experience having done only two hunts, both in Colorado......

It helps that I am in logistics and travel for work quite bit......
