Hunting with Black Rifles

So, question, is the MH "black" given that it is NR??
"Black" or "Green" rifles refers to modern sporting rifles that cosmetically resemble firearms that the media would incorrectly describe as "assault" rifles.

Civilian legal 'military-style' sporting rifles are not select fire (cannot fire full-auto or burst) and by definition, cannot be properly or legally described as "assault" rifles.

The black and green terms refers to the most common colours or finishes found on these rifles. The original M-16 (which incidentally does meet the requirements of an assault rifle) was also nicknamed, "The Black Rifle." However, we firearms enthusiasts have co-opted the term for our own use, as it is relatively benign and print friendly.

In Canada, semi-auto sporting rifles such as the AR-15 and variants, Rob Arms XCR, SIG Classic Green/Black Special/Blue Star series of rifles (outwardly they resemble the Sig 550 series/family but aren't), Armalite AR-180 and a host of others all fall under this general, catch-all 'category' of "Black" & "Green" rifles.

An excellent response to a similar question about the true meaning of the term black rifle.

Please don't revive this 6yr old dead thread! :p

When I did hunt (late 1980's), I always took my black rifles because I wanted to "normalize" these rifles amoungst people who should know better (i.e. Joe Hunter).
Met one CO who asked me a couple of times if it (the rifle) was full auto or not. my reply of it being unrestricted was good enough for him

I had a gen 2 heavy barrel in 556 years ago, and sold it because 1) it was too heavy, and more importantly 2) it was too front heavy. The keymods in XCR-m and XCR-L's are much better balanced.

I had the same Gen2 L and agree with your assessment. Mine has gone to another home too. Only reason I'm keeping the M is it is a good DMR type rifle and I can accept the weight in a .308 but not a .223. Still not a hunting gun though!

Absolutely.

And I am going to shoot a deer with my Tavor some day, and I plan to use 64 grain Winchester PowerPoints.

If a Conservation or Police Officer takes issue with my NR Tavor, they won't be leaving with my firearm. They will get on the radio & computer & figure out THEY are in the wrong.

Cheers
Jay

Jay, depending on who answers that radio call they may be leaving with your rifle. Police can seize anything that may be evidence in a criminal investigation. It will be held until the investigation ends or you make a successful challenge to a higher court in that province. FRT number or not if it goes that way it will be several months.

It was around 6 for me to get back a single shot cooey, asks and a glock .40 cal mag. The police didn't break any laws when they took them.

id like too. but i get enough stink eye from random strangers if they see my with a typical hunting rifle. imagine taking out an ar 10 for deer hunting lol. people would probably call the cops

Tavor FRT#126799 . I keep it folded up with my small game/coyote license.

Thanks for the FRT.

I have moved on from the Win PP 64gr years ago. There are some better performing 224 projectiles to load for deer. I use 65gr BT Sierra Game Kings.

I have no expierence with it in Canada but I have hunted all over the US with my SR25 and OBR.

When I'm back home in VA I go hunting pretty much exclusively with my SR25 gets the odd look and stupid "WHY YOU NEED 30 BULLETS TO KILL A DEER" comments from fudds but they never seem to understand it has to have a 5 round mag according to state law. Never had any real problems before besides a game warden making me take apart the PMAG to show the limiter I had installed to make sure I was in compliance.

Like Wise, however to keep the authorities at bay I do not have any large capacity mag's in position that have been pinned. I usually carry the 10,5 and on the occasion a 1 round mag.

Good point. I haven't hunted with my Tavor yet but I think I will take that advice. No need for 15-17 rounds in the rifle with Beowulf mags for hunting. It only would make my position more difficult for me and unnecessary for hunting. Think I will stick to the lower profile RRA Lar 15 mag holding just 10.
