Texas hog hunt.... Tip amount?

I will be in the Dallas Fort Worth area for work a few times and am working on a weekend hog hunt with a local outfitter...... I have requested spot and stalk vs. over feeder, which means I require a guide...... There is a $300 surcharge for the guide, but I am quite sure the guide doesn't see the whole $300.....

For background, I will not be staying at the ranch, my company pays my hotel and meals, so will be paying only for the hunt itself....... The cost for two days of hunting is $1100 USD.....

So, assuming my guide is capable and gets me on to one or two good hogs, what should the gratuity look like?.....

I have been on a few outfitted hunts, but all of them were straightforward and the gratuity went to the host and was distributed accordingly...... I am thinking that this will be a rare exchange where I literally hand the guide himself cash......

Thoughts?

Using the .338?

Looking into the permits and such..... I can use a .308 AR loaner and avoid the hassle, but I would really like my own rifle..... Either the .338 or the .308 scout would be my choice.......

The problem is that I don't have a defined hunt date at this point and that makes the paperwork harder.......

For the gun, a form 6 will get you a year permit, you do not need to have your hunting licence purchased to get it. If flying I would use their ar10, we use them for hogs in Georgia and like them, not that you can not fly with guns, but it is a hassle. $100 per person was standard 15 years back for a good duck hunt tip wise, but should depend on effort

Thanks .....have used my own rifles on US hunts before, but that was a few years ago......

Brings up another concern.. The primary purpose of the two week trip is for work...... I can't risk not making work related deadlines due to personal interest......

If you can get your Texas Hunting Licence now, you can start the application process.
The Approved ATF Form 5330.3D is then good for one year.

It's not like a trophy deer / elk hunt (IMO), it's a cull hog hunt. You aren't going to "not shoot" because they aren't big enough.
If I was the guide I would be grateful for the tip no matter what amount.

I somewhat agree...... I did the heli hog thing and that was a cull.......

This is a bit different, in that my guide will be gutting and cleaning my hog(s) and I will be taking meat home....... Does that change the game?........

Generally, 10-15% of the total guided hunt price is the norm when he does it all from a lodge or remote camp.

With you staying off ranch and making day hunts with him, 10% is adequate.

My BassPro bud in Hemphill charges about that for a full guided day of bass fishing on Rayburn or Toledo Bend.

That is my first instinct as well....... And bigbubba kind of confirmed it....

Just don't want to wear out my welcome...... They have some nice cheap hunts near a spot it looks like I will be visiting frequently......

Lol...... Would certainly help justify the .338....... Would have to take the scope off and do an iron hunt....... But I wager you would like that even more..... Lol

Yes do both those things; and let me live vicariously through you.

I could even mail you a handful of woodleighs when I get back to AB; though iirc you are neighbours with Trade-ex

Give your guide $150.00 cash and a bottle of this:

Tradex is about a 35 minute drive..... As is higginson.........

That aside, the reason I would go scout was that it would have an rds...... No scope..... This may be a close range hunt (I sure hope it is)...... But the .338 has excellent irons and I would not feel uncomfortable with them in the least.......
