Texas hog hunt.... Tip amount?

I don't know about Texas, but anywhere south of the Rio Grande (all the way to Cape Horn) you tip anybody who does anything for you.

Ask the guide what he gets of the surcharge discretely. Take what he says and adjust accordingly. Don't be a ####.

i will based on 10% and used the loaner rifle, then depending how much the guide will do for me, especially my intentions are to go back there in the future, i may upgrade my tipping, always served me good in the past to be more generous...

Good hunting Superbrad... JP.

Thanks for all the tips guys.... pun intended.... The handful of US hunts I have done in the past have been more elaborate and determining the gratuity was easier.... I am going to start the paperwork now and will decide on the rifle shortly...

Furgitt the Crown Royal, and replace it with good 'ol Canadian Maple Serrup't.
That'll git'im talking.

Sounds like a fun adventure, good luck and take lottsa photos.

Yes do both those things; and let me live vicariously through you.

I could even mail you a handful of woodleighs when I get back to AB; though iirc you are neighbours with Trade-ex

Appreciate the offer Conor....... But the guide gun is set up for 225 gr. Partitions....... If I were to take it up to 300, then I would question why I need the RSM....... And if one of the two had to go, it wouldn't be the RSM..... And I really like the guide gun..... So never the two shall meet as they say.....

As you know I have done a lot of "out of country" hunting and I tend to tip generously because I have an inherent need for people to like me....... , but seriously, I tip directly dependent on how the service is and the hunt quality and the outcome. These boys doing the guiding don't get paid a lot and most do it because they love it.........seems to be the same the world over, so I like to be a little extravagant IF I had a good time and the guide was a good ol' boy and he did his job. This, I might add, is not always the case and your displeasure should be reflected in the tip, or lack thereof. If you are in contact with the outfitter and if he is not also the guide, it is prudent to ask the guides boss what is fair and then you can decide from there. The number he may give you will be very likely weighed between his desire for you to speak well of his operation or possibly return yourself so it won't be over the top prohibitively expensive, but by the same token he will want to be fair for his guy doing the work for you. Some refuse to comment but most will quote a range of what is considered to be fair by all involved. Most disagree with over tipping, as expectations can become over inflated so I have found this to be a safe way to go about it.

$150 if you get skunked or $40 per hog that they drag out, process, package and freeze for you. A couple extra $ if you are getting sausage made. (whichever is greater)

Some of us prefer Rye

I would like to add that I'm not in Texas but in Florida and have helped my friend guide for hog hunts.

Don't know if this relates but the fishing guides up here are averaging 2-3 hundy/day from Texan fishermen...4 days of fishing is going for $5200 USD outta Winnipeg, it's 5 star nice...Fly-outs are extra @ $450/seat...12000 plus hour Otter driver gets the odd thank-you...WTF OVER !

One other small point when considering tips. As some guys have mentioned rye or other things as a tip, regardless of how much you decide to tip, gifts like booze, knife or some other item should be considered separately from the money. Our PHs often get repeat gifts from their hunters and there is only so many hunting knives etc a guy needs. In other words a gift doesn't put gas in the tank, so if you want to personalize your tip with a gift it's a great idea, however I don't believe it should be viewed as part of the monetary compensation for a job well done.

I appreciate the tips guys..... The hunts I have been on previously were usually the full deal, accommodation, meals etc......

On this one, the guide will be dressing and caping my hogs (only one will be caped providing I get one worthy of caping)..... They will also be butchering up however many I get up to 3 with a small surcharge for additionals..... Also, being spot and stalk, the guide will be carrying to protect me from a charge...... Not sure how much of a big deal that is, but its something I guess......

I am not worried about overtipping, more worried about under tipping based on the fact that I took all of the luxuries out to drop the price...... The guide's job is still just as hard.... I also made it clear that I would rather stalk a quality out versus doing a cull type hunt..... So maybe that should factor in?...... I also want to learn about hogs and hog behaviour on this trip because there are local farms where you can go self guided for as little as $150 a day and I will likely be down there often enough to take advantage.......
