Savage Mark II FV Heavy Barrel Bolt Action Rifle opinions?

Nice ammo type?

I'm having a hard time if I want 17 or 22. 17 is all good ammo really, 22 there is so many different brands. Gota find the "one" yours likes.

.17 ammo is so expensive, that unless killing gophers and such it's kinda a waste and at times harder to find in stock, where as .22 ammo is cheaper and easier to find, the great selection is also to your advantage as you can try lots to find a few your gun likes best, and in the end once you find the right ammo it will likely be more accurate than the .17. Just trying what ammo I have at home when I mounted my new scope, once done at the 25 yard with my .22 I shot the staples out of the corners of the target, before I moved to the 50 yard.

But if you want more oomph and louder and faster I love my .17 and have no idea how I did so long without one, it's my goto gopher gun and runs flawless.

Just bought the Troy Landry......sighted in and started literally killing flies at 50 yards. No joke! Cheek riser is a must.

I just did as well but unfortunately/fortunately. I had to fly to Japan for my vacation a day after I recieved it. I look forward to shooting it after seeing your comment!

This is the one I was looking for

Hope this helps in your decision.

I like the idea of being on at 50, is also on at 100 ! lol

Also being able to stretch it out for 200 yards would be fun.

Is it worth the price ? I mean they are similar once you break into good match 22 ammo...

Looks like you just need to do what I did then and get one of each LOL.

I have one in 22lr and another non accutrigger wood stocked one in 17 mach 2. They are without a doubt my 2 most accurate rimfires. I kept the factory stocks for now as I use both for hunting and the stocks fit well. A little on the heavy side with the heavy barrel scope and bipod. I run mostly subsonics thru the 22 but when I shoot 100 yards or more I use cci standard or eley practice

Have one and love it.
Ran CCI Standard through it for the EOSC Rimfire challenge and won.

I have the BTVSS. I like it. Came in 2nd place at the club rimfire shoot a few years ago with it. I also have a 'chutz 64 that will beat the Savage every day, all day long. If you can swing the bit of extra $$$ get an Anschutz. Other than that its a even toss between the Savage and a CZ.

Savages 93 Fluted, Bull Barrel, Boyds stock, 22magnum

They are a bunch of fun and very accurate. I am contemplating getting the 16" barreled version also.

I have a Mark II FVSR in .22lr and absolutely love it. My biggest advice is to change out the stock if you want a proper cheek weld and put some thicker bottom metal on it. Been learning how to shooting mine out to 400 yards with reasonable consistency.

Those are 5 shot groups at 50 yds. My gun really prefers CCI Standard Velocity.

Nice. Where you get your stock ? Muzzle break make a differnce?

I have had a pile of Savage 93R17 and MKII Heavy barrel rifles... mostly for the kids when they were growing into firearms... but they all proved to be very accurate.

I have one and have spent a great deal of time behind it. I can tell you that some of these rifles shoot very well while others shoot OK. It is luck of the draw and you should expect some variation rifle to rifle considering the construction and price point. I recommend you shoot the gun as is before doing any mods. I added and apache trigger, Sharp Shooter Supply stock and an EGW rail. Mine loves Sk ammo and cheats on the half inch at 50 yards type of accufacy with the odd flier ruining groups here and there.

If I were going buy another one I'd probably buy used with all the required mods already done as those bores will outlast us. There can be some wear on the cooking cam but otherwise these only get better with age.

In my opinion the trigger with minor modification is one of the best as an entry rim fire and the bolt is smooth like butter. Is it better or worse than the competition? That's all lies on opinion

These can start off being a touch rough to chamber and unchamber from the lever. But they self polish after a couple of hundred rounds nicely and then continue to become even more silky smooth over the next few hundred rounds.

The other weak point I've found on the Savage MkII's is the magazine and mag well. The well is formed just from some pieces of sheet metal and if care isn't constantly used the forces on the 10 round mags from bumping around tend to open up the well and then the mag does not seat just right and it can start to jam and bend rounds being stripped off the magazine and turn them into little round boomerangs. But if you are a touch more delicate than the kids I know that shoot these things a LOT you may never run into this issue. And if you do it's easily fixed by bending the guide pieces back. A truly awesome fix would be to tune the well pieces then silver solder them. Or even just wrap the pieces in some strong fibers and epoxy the wrap into place.

The adjustable trigger tension setting spring is a little too long and stiff at first. But go easy when trimming a portion of the coils off. A little goes a long way. I think I trimmed a coil and a half from mine and it was really close to too much. At "full hard" I'm down to around a 2 lb pull. So a small bit at a time for WHEN you trim it.

The barrels do work well. Especially when you take the time to find the ammo it likes. And it doesn't need to be the fancy high dollar stuff to get decent results. I only did my testing at 25 yards so there's more to be learned yet by shooting at 50. But initial results for my BTV show me getting a nice groups with CCI SV, Federal Automatch, Eley Practice and, of all things, 50rnd packs in trays Blazer.
