Hey guys, question regarding barrel options.
With having more options to choose from I started putting together an 18" SPR type build but now I'm on to barrels and I'm having a hard time choosing what's the best course.
Background, I'm no precision shooter, I'm not looking for hair splitting accuracy but I want something that I can shoot minute of badguy out to 5-600M.

I was set on the Rainier Arms 18" ultra match SPR barrel which rang in at 480.00 + shipping but someone pointed out getting a custom barrel by ATRS done up, and the price isn't much more at about 550.00 which I can pick up locally.

Anyone with more knowledge than me, would I notice any significance between the two barrels? Would it just be a better buy to spend an extra 70 bucks and get the custom one made up or would it be better spent on something else for the gun?

For what it's worth, I do plan on cutting my teeth with reloading for this gun and will probably tailor a load simalir to the mk262 load & the SMK 77gr.

I'd go with the ATRS barrel. Rainier is a mass-produced barrel extension bolted on to a Shilen match barrel. Remember that on an AR the chamber is in the barrel extension and both the quality of the chamber reaming as well as the quality of the barrel machining contribute to accuracy.

Also, as a local provider I think you'd get better service with ATRS.

the barrel extension has the lockup and feedramp. the chamber is machined into the barrel.

You are right, nevertheless the Rainier portions of the barrel manufacture are mass-produced and in my experience do not live-up to custom barrel standards. It's a shame since Shilen produces nice tubes.

Doesn't ATRS use Bob Jury's barrels?

That is 1 option, we use a ton of Lilja barrels as well as Proof Research.
Jury makes a good barrel to be sure, but it is only 1 of several options we offer, something that very few companies can offer, is the options.
With a custom barrel you get what YOU spec, not simply what is offered.

More often than not, they do.

And you know this how? Please stick to posting information you actually have knowledge on.
The fact is we use ALOT more Lilja barrels. About 10 times more in fact. But the client is who decides on the brand of barrel blank used, as well as chambering, contour and any other specs they wish to.

Sorry Rick, meant no offence, just going off of experience. Most of the people I run into around here with ATRS rigs have Jury barrels. Also had Bob build me a barrel and had to wait a bit for him to finish all of his blanks for you. Working with Bob was a pleasant experience, I wasn't expecting such a negative response.

We DO use many Jury barrels. I believe we take about 35% 40% of what Bob can produce. Certainly his largest client.
His barrels are excellent and he is a great guy to deal with. Being local is also a major bonus. This can account for a higher concentration of certain components in a specific locale.
I just get a little frustrated when folks who don't work here or have any knowledge of daily operations make broad statements about my business.
We have had all sorts of mis-information posted, some intentional to try and discredit or slag ATRS for furthering of personal agendas, some just because those posting did not know better. After as much literally sabotage that a few CGN members have sent our way on our most current rifle developments I may be a bit touchy.

My SR rig uses a 20" ATRS barrel and am extremely happy with the results out to 600 yards. I've no experience with Ranier but have about 2000 rounds through the 20" and has been a consistent and accurate performer.

Nice Mapleseed Patch!

Thanks.

For those who don't know, Mapleseed is a rifle marksmanship fundamentals course patterned after the Appleseed program run by the Revolutionary War Veterans Association in the US. It is typically a two day course shot at 25 yards with targets simulating 100, 200, 300 and 400 yard distances. Its goal is to provide traditional rifle marksmanship instruction to its attendees with the opportunity to shoot qualification targets with the "prize' being an Appleseed "Rifleman" patch or in our case a Mapleseed "Rifleman" patch. Rifleman level is scoring 210 or more out of a possible 250 points at simulated 100,200,300 and 400 yard targets.

For those looking to develop rifle marksmanship or improve, it is a great way to get some structured training on fundamentals to build on.

The first and only Mapleseed was held at Bancroft, Ontario last year with another one trying to get organized in the fall of 2016 somewhere in Ontario. Appleseeds are regularly held across the US throughout the year sometimes within a few hours of the Canadian border. There is a private facebook group for Mapleseed and I can add you to the group. Updates will be posted there. If you're interested, PM your email id and will send the invite to the group.

I had a ranier ultra match in my AR-10 and I had an ATRS stainless barrel with integral muzzle brake in a DMR build I did a few years ago, both were nice and it's hard to compare a 308 barrel to a 223 barrel but the stainless barrel from ATRS was a tack driver with almost all ammo I put through it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another of their barrels after my experience with that one. I still wonder why I sold that rifle. Unless the Ranier barrel comes with the bolt as well I'd spend the extra $70 and buy from Rick and the boys at ATRS, you won't regret your purchase either way but I'd rather support a Canadian company given a choice and knowing how good their products are.
