I thought I'd post up some pics of a 9.3x62 project built from stuff lying around the cabinet that had been cast off and picked up here and there, I went out to see a good friend for a week in Nova Scotia (another 9.3 fan) Browning270 here on the site and between delivering calfs and rum and coke's we spent a couple of hours in the shop.

The rifle is a husky FN 8x57, barrel a douglas 22" 9.3x62 I got from Skit on the site here, a williams reciever sight from another project long ago and a front base and insert picked out of the cull pile

A little polishing on the barrel and headspace check before the initial install, here's a pic of the removal tool and old barrel

on the mill/drill for the reciever sight drill/tap, we went with 6-40 machine screws rather than the almost impossible to find 6-48's, Check out the nifty tap guide, works like a hot damn.

Part II

here's a pic of the blue job/ final product , I used g 96 cream and blasted the metal after scotchbriting with a bit of brakecleen before applying with toilet paper. Terribly precise I know but it looks better than a fair number of factory jobs

If you've got a weak stomach its time to go elsewhere as no new rifle is complete without a test after assembly, This projects test was a 15-1600 lb steer for the freezer , after sighting in (8 rounds of 59.0 RL 15 with 285 gr Privi Partisan) we were punching the center of the bull at 100 yds. Steer was whacked between the lookers at 18-20 yds

I have more graphic pics but suffice to say the pp put its lights out like throwing a switch.

We also sectioned some bullets on the mill and I'll post some pics of the 270 speer, 285 pp etc for comparison purposes if anyone wants to see them.

Part III

here are some bullet comparison pics, all were sectioned with an end mill and buffed by hand a bit with green scotchbrite so the jacket thickness etc would show up on the pics

left to right PP 285 gr, Speer 270 gr, Norma 286 gr, Norma 232gr hp.

Jacket construction of speer 270 on left PP 285 on right, note the "Hot Core "that is supposedly fused to the jacket lying on the bench

these are pics of a hornady 35 cal 200 gr interlock jacket on left, pp 285 gr middle, Speer 270 right, the interlock and double cannelure on the PP really work in my opinion,(trying to seperate core from jacket) the speer hot core process again in my opinion only is a joke. I wouldnt hesitate to use the speer 270 grain bullet in my rifles as its way tougher than either of the Norma's judging by the jacket thickness and the way it milled , Norma's were extremely soft , followed by the speer with the hornady and PP both requiring more effort. I am by no means a material design engineer so take my opinions as just that. I thought there might be some interest in this so I'm just sharing.

I did open up the aperture on the peep sight , not quite a ghost ring but a nice fast easy to use sight. The rifle feeds and shoots flawlessly with no modifications to the magazine follower , feed ramp or anything else. It appears to be good and accurate but havent done enough shooting with it yet to say how good. Headspace turned out perfect with both shoulders contacting, sights are square and in line and I'm quite happy with the end result.

Thanks for sharing and for the pictures. I have experience with all of the bullets shown in my 9,3's. I am a big fan of the caliber and have used it on our local game as well as on a variety of animals in Africa. I have never tried RL 15 but its on my list to try provided I can find some.

You know, I might just keep one of my Mauser's to do this project? I've always liked the 9.3x62.. Where did you get the barrel?

Pete

I bought the barrel off Skit here on this site, he had it on a parker hale he was using for a boat gun, supposedly just 80 rounds down the pipe and I believe him. Barry at bits and pieces sells heym's threaded contoured and short chambered for around 250.00 , I have one on another FN 98 that I'm really happy with as well.

I have a Heym 24" long screwed on an FN 98 action and it works great. The coolest 9.3X62 gun I have is a Tikka Battue in that caliber. If that isn't the ultimate boat/quad moose/bear rifle around, then I don't know what is. It shoots great and has an excellent trigger. Recoil isn't too bad with a Limbsaver pad on the back even with full power 286 grn loads. It is now one of my favorite calibers to hunt with. Too bad more companies don't chamber it.

FWIW the Speers hot core is not fused to the jacket nor is it supposed to be, it is meant to eliminate the oxidation that can form on the lead and also the copper in between the time the lead is inserted in the jacket. The layer of oxidation can promote the lead from slipping out of the jacket according to Speer.

It is just marketing in my opinion.

I have cut apart the speer as well as a 250g Ballistic tip. The ballistic tip is neat to look at cross sectioned.

Thanks for the info as I was always under the impression it was supposed to effectively solder the jacket to the core. It does make sense looking at it the core material was still shiny and didnt appear to be oxidized when we pulled it from the jacket. Its good to learn.:)
