Well done, enjoy! The third from the top, is that a MAS-36? If yes, I wonder where you got it. They seem to be "unobtanium", at least on the typical online stores...

Yes it is a MAS 35/51 (it has the grenade launcher on the front), bought it from a friend. If you look at the buy/sell forum here or go to gun shows you'll probably find one much faster.

Great collection! Would you be willing to tell us how you think the SVT-40 compares to your ag42b and MAS 35/51?

I have been thinking that I should just get a sportered L-E to enjoy while waiting for the right full wood example, how do you like yours?

Thanks! The svt is very rough in construction/finish compared to the 36/51 and Ag-42b (as is typical with russian stuff) and is made up of force matched parts, whereas the other two are very well made, and all matching.

That said, the svt looks quite cool, and is extremely fun to shoot. The ag42b is pretty damn accurate from what I saw, and almost no recoil. The 36/51 is a solid bolt action, and also quite accurate (maybe not the best looking sadly).

If you can get a cheap sporter lee enfield that hasn't been TOO hacked up, I'd say go for it. They are still fun to shoot. I have definitely gotten $120 worth of enjoyment out of them while I look for a nice one.

I should mention it helps if you have lots of cheap surplus ammo on hand, or reload (as I do), as some of the ammo (e.g. 7.5x54 MAS) is not "common", but PRVI loads it at least so there is a source of loaded ammo (and virgin brass) for now.

Since you have fired my 7mm FN49, and later on your own AG42 and SVT40, what do you see as each designs good and bad points?

That FN was the nicest of all 3 that's for sure! From what I have read (and seen) it's probably the best semi-auto made in that period (and high up on the shopping list). Have no shot one enough to detail any negative points, they apparently had some firing pin issues?

I do like the quirky design of the ag42, with the whole no bolt handle thing especially. No recoil at all on this one, so you can just shoot it all day if you want.

Really do appreciate how light the SVT-40 is compared to these 2. I know they were apparently not liked by Russian soldiers but the design does not seem very complicated at all after I stripped it today (from what I understand the corrosive ammo was the problem, which also caused problems with the ag42 (pre b).

That said these all need small mods to make them not destroy your precious brass, but nothing too complicated at least.

Subbed to hear other opinions on this... I've both AG-42B and SVT-40. I have a sentimental feel for the Ljungman, and a deep respect for 6.5x55. To own, and fire I'm a Ljungman fan all the way. (have also had Hakim and Rashid pass through too). This fall I'll carry the SVT though... Because I love my Ljungman it doesn't mean I don't have huge respect for th'SVT. Mine certainly has a deer left in it.

I have only envy for the FN trigger-squeezing crowd, and have never fired one.

Anecdotal add on...was about 30 years ago I acquired my Ljungman at a local auction (sold as a semi-auto swedish mauser, and originally registered as a torped overslag) for 60 or 80 bucks....20 more than the SKS D fetched. No one there had a clue about it, and a 15 year old Camster was surrounded by "knowledgeable adult folks" who all leapt back, and blanched the first time the action snapped closed! N'er caught a finger the entire time it's been mine. When I bought it surplus ammo could be had (my fav was norwegian at 5$ for 15rds, came in a white box with red laquer ring around bullet and primer) almost everywhere, and both Remington and Winchester started producing SP hunting ammo (pretty dear at $12 for 20rds).

I think you did ok if you got the bayonet with it too. It looks like it is in great shape from what I can see from your picture.

Ah ok, have seen people quoting something $300-400 for one, perhaps that was a while ago. It's definitely a very quirky, and awesome rifle, and in very good condition. I'm definitely gonna be feeding it lots of ammo hehe.

I've had some interest when I mentioned taming the brass murder, I bought some screws from the US with the correct pitch, will be trying them out tonight. They're too long to work as is, but with some cutting and shaping should be good to go.

Camster, every time I read something like that I feel I need a time machine! I'll be sure to pick up some $10 garand boxes too, hehe. That bolt is no joke, my friend was very careful loading up the ag42b after I showed him it means business.

Some pictures of the bolts I got:

BE CAREFUL WITH THE GAS PORT SCREW: it is a very thin straight groove, and is punched in place. If you try to force it with something too small, it will strip pretty damn easy. Luckily, if you own a Mosin, Mother Russia has you covered with a tool that fits perfectly:

Here's the larger screws installed. Obviously they are way too big and need to be cut and shaped, but preliminary testing will be done tonight hopefully.

Will do!

If anyone's interested in the bolts, they're here: (they also have titanium ones if you want)

https://www.probolt-usa.com/stainless-steel-dome-head-bolt-m4-x-0-5mm-x-12mm-pack-x-5.html

I had read some other (way older) post on another forum, and found that that person had used the exact same website and that the bolts worked so I did not hesitate buying them, and they definitely screw in properly to my Ag42. Comes to about $50 for 5 bolts with the crap dollar and shipping.

That looks like it will work pretty darn well! As you say tapping the port to a common thread is the "easiest" way but irreversible modification really bothers me on these.
