Ontario 2016 Moose Tags are out: Received my Individual Bull Tag for Gun Season!!

There's 5 of us going to the camp this year last I have heard 3 of Use got Calves so either were hunting babies or drinking more beer this October
Here's hoping on one good tag

congrats man! mine came yesterday. this is the first moose tag ive won, just one difference. mine doesn't specify which wmu or if its bull or cow like yours. can anyone shed some light on this for me?

You can only hunt calves in a WMU with an open season for calves.

...Been a couple of years since I bought a moose license but I'm pretty sure that's a regular old, default, calf tag...You automatically get one of those when you buy a moose license and you enter into a draw for adult tags. It seems as though you were unsuccessful in the draw. Tough luck man. Maybe next year.:yingyang:

Correctamundo. If it doesn't explicitly say bull or cow then you have been calved. Everyone who makes their $55.70 (in Ontario) donation gets one of those.

Yeah I hear that! Calves seem few and far between, I'm curious if the new calf season thing they tried out last year had any positive effect? In my neck of the woods it doesn't seem like many folks were getting much, but the same can't be said for the groups of people with cards bringing home 4 moose before October.

In the area I hunt the positive (and intended) effect is an increase in calf survival, though that could easily be attributed to the return of the spring bear hunt. Both came into effect at pretty well the same time.
Most of the people I know who shot calves were as a byproduct of someone else shooting a cow. Few guys I know actually go out for the new calf season. The weather has started to turn and by then enough hunters have been pressuring long enough that the moose have pushed back into the areas that you only want to hunt if you enjoy spending two days trying to get the carcass out.

My favourite are the guys with a handful of cash and a "special permit holder" on speed dial. Who needs a draw and a tag when you can shoot a moose, make a quick call, hand off some cash, and bobs your uncle.

The Calf hunt has been reduced to a two week period, the start and end date depending on the specific WMU. It's imperative to be especially aware of which WMU hunters are going into. In the southern and central Moose range, changing the dates and restricting the harvest by reducing adult tag allocations means thousands of hunters will effectively be shut out of the hunt, altogether, because it didn't give them enough time to re-arrange hunt dates. It's sad, but,it a sign of worse things to come, like the elimination of party hunting much like many US States have found necessary to restrict the harvest.

That is why I said; "WMU with an OPEN SEASON for calves."
