Pump for trap/skeet?

Appears he is shooting a custom stocked, higher vent rib Model 12 to shoot so well from the 27 yard, not my 1956 plain barrel Field model.

I started out... actually I still use a pump action for skeet. I can't afford a nice over/under or semi-auto yet. Not a problem. And personally, I like to do everything with a "survival mentality" and using a pump really teaches you how to recharge, track and snag a clay when you miss on your first shot.

Hi all,

I'm new to shooting. My interests lie mostly in hunting, but to improve myself for waterfowl season I'd like to put some time in shooting trap and skeet.

I have a 12 Ga Remington 870 which I'll be shooting with, but wanted to hear some opinions regarding its usefulness at the range vs an o/u or side-by-side.

Thanks in advance.

Since your goal is to improve your hunting skills, using your hunting gun for shooting clays is a very good idea.

when I first started I had (still have) a love for pump guns. They sure make it fun. I thought why would anyone every bother using an O/U or semi....but when you are close to that first perfect game you want to do everything to achieve it.

To each is his own, I started with a pump, progessed to O/U, then realized I had no desire to shoot an O/U, sold it, bought a Model 12, couldn't be happier.

All I shoot for trap is my Remington 870 classic trap. Fits me perfect & use an extended extra full choke & crush targets from 16 & 27. Pumping the gun doesn't bother me, Pound for pound I could pump faster than some of the shooters at our club using semi autos.
Good luck.

Some will never believe it till they see it with their own eyes.
A guy at VGC in Richmond shoots his 870 CT on the Sporting Clay Field for schitz&giggles and does very well too.

A pump gun is not a handicap for the clay target games UNTIL that ONE time you short stroke it and fail to load the second round for your second target and it's called "lost" due to operator error, not gun or round failure! But hey, I degress. I started shooting trap and skeet when pumps and autos were the predominant guns on the field. There was just as good of scores posted in those days too.
