Beware the new Weaver Grand Slam scope rings

I can't believe Weaver hasn't been sued for this. The box says only, "Fits firearms with Weaver top mount bases". There is no warning about them being designed for Weaver Grand Slam bases only. The recoil lug on the Grand Slam does not extend the full width of the base. It is only in the center. It apparently deliberately omits and just barely contacts the bearing surface sections (one on either side) on traditional Weaver bases. It will fit them, but the recoil lug does not function, it just barely hangs on by only the tiniest section on either side of the base. They may have tried to avoid lawsuits by stating in the instructions to use "appropriate" Weaver bases, but the instructions are inside the packaging and not accessible until after purchase.

These rings look very dangerous and I wouldn't think of putting them on a rifle with normal Weaver bases.

huh?
I've got a bunch of oddball bases from nc star as well- my brother can testify to this- just change your rings- it REALLY is a SMALL MATTER

Are they a new style? I haven't needed rings in a while, but the last weaver grand slams I picked up had the bolt that runs through and threads into the other leg.

That isn't an "oddball base...", just the standard Weaver base (made by Weaver) that's been around for half a century at least. I have a drawer full of them, for all kinds of different rifles, and they are all made the same way with the bearing surfaces on either side.. And by claiming on their packaging that the Grand Slams "Fit(s) firearms with Weaver top mount bases" they are implying that these rings will fit any standard Weaver base. It won't be a "SMALL MATTER" when someone loses their eye.

These are the latest Weaver Grand Slams, only a few months old.

I guess when they say "fits" they mean "will attach without interference", not "will work properly with". My foot "fits" into a size 15 boot...but I sure can't use a pair that size.

When you consider some of the overly-cautious, liability-conscious warnings that products come with these days, it's a bit astonishing to see them putting this on the market. Stick those on a lightweight rifle with any recoil, plop a heavy scope on top, and there will be problems.

I know it's heresy to say this, but not everybody loves Zee rings. I don't like the fact that the two sides of the base are one single piece of metal which is squeezed by the cross-bolt to grip the base. It's always a pain, and sometimes impossible, to slide the bottom half of the ring onto the base grooves from the end as these rings require. I don't like the small head on the screw, nor the wide slot it has...both contribute to buggered-up heads if you're not careful.

Sorry for the thread derail. The problem shown here is very real.

I contacted Weaver about this and they have said they will give me refund.

I'm still puzzled why they produced them this way...its as if someone read the engineering drawing backwards.

Care to share the details?
P.M. if you choose.

Thanks Rob.

Nothing special. I just emailed Weaver and told them about the problem and said I wanted my money back. They said to send them the rings and they would give me my money back. That's all.

I have found Weaver excellent to deal with. After buying an old Savage 340 with a Weaver side mount, and finding one of the quick detach screws was missing, I emailed them looking for a screw. They mailed 2 out no charge.

They mailed 2 out no charge.

Interesting, as they told me that ITAR prevented them from doing this, and under no circumstance would they ship me a replacement screw for their defective junk. The good news is, there is really no reason to buy anything made by Weaver, as everything they make is made (better) by someone else. ;)

Leupold USA and Weaver shipped me few parts. they asked for the export permit authorization and way to go for Canada and no fee for me. so far better than Canadian distributors ....

I finally got around to sending those rings back to Weaver. Federal sent me a check. Full refund plus.

I still can't understand how they could make rings like that. Its almost as if they deliberately inverted a set of engineering drawings.
