CDN Tire K98s - Opinions?

Hello everyone

My local Canadian Tire can bring in Mauser K98s for around $769. I was told I would have to put down a full deposit and they could 'bring in a few to let me have my choice'. I've already got a 1937 BSW that I picked up for $100, but I'd like to get an authentic war time production, with the appropriate stamps that's in decent, usable shape. I'm assuming the CDN Tire rifles are Russian capture with mismatched parts/ missing capture screws.

Has anyone had experiences with the K98s from CDN tire? Are they any good?

If I really want a decent, war time Mauser K98 am I better off posting an add on the EE?

IMO the Canadian tire prices are a bit rich, you could do better on the EE or at a gun show for the sort of rifle you're looking for. Russian capture is almost guaranteed what they can bring in. RC Mausers are 99% of the time mismatched and most have no front sight hood. Hope you find something!
 
Ive seen them in a local CT to me. Thought about it, but I am way to uninformed on Mausers. I have a Swede, a vz24, and a Brazilian. All of which I paid less than $769 added together. If it helps, I could likely stop by and snap a couple pics at the local CT here.
 
Thanks for the advice. I keep an eye on the EE milsurp postings BUT anytime anything of interest comes up it is virtually with out fail always $SPF despite still being listed with a few 'bumps' or BTT.

I've found that the asking prices for RC'd WW2 Mauser K98s at the Calgary or Saskatoon shows seem to hover around $700-900 as of late, so I figured if CDN Tire can get them, why not give them a try, however the deposit is a little steep.

Has anyone seen these firearms?

I picked up my RC from Island Outfitters in Victoria BC and I paid about that much, taxes in mind you. Still neat to own a bit of history. Plenty of bleacher experts that will say if you're willing to pay that much the price will stay up. Well, I'm gathering by the continued demand that the prices will stay that way for awhile. I'm no expert but every piece in my rifle has a different number and therefore a different history. That's how I look at it. It's a great shooter and it was fun to adjust the front sight and tinker with the reloading until I found the sweet spot. That's what I got out of it and that's enough for me. It came with the repro (I assume) sight hood that I'm still struggling to put on. I took the RC shellac off and rubbed in the linseed oil. Looks good and it was fun. I got the bug for these rifles sometime after I got it.

I found the one here at CT in Halifax to be in poor condition but if you get to choose, why not? I think if you check out places listed on the banner page here that the price plus shipping would be the same as CT or close.

I also have a few M48s and they shoot just as good as the K98s in my limited experience. There are a few K98 experts on here and they know their stuff but the M48 isn't a bad alternative as a shooter, to me anyway.

I would re-check with the sports manager before laying down any money.

Effective the 5th of September, Canadian Tire Corporation is taking an active role (again) in what individual stores can carry in terms of firearms (Corporate Image is cited). There is an "approved list" of about 5200 non-restricted firearms which stores will be allowed to carry. The Corporation has instructed all the wholesalers that deal with stores not to sell them any firearms that are not on the list (which is already compiled with the co-operation of the wholesalers).

I have been working on converting over all our current firearm inventory to the new "system" for the past couple of weeks and looking through the 5200'ish rifles and shotguns listed there is not one "mil-surp" on the approved list. So while stores will be able to sell existing stock of "non-approved" firearms they will no longer be able to source them.

No Milsurps? You'd think they be at the top of the list. Seems like an oversight.

The local CT here said the same . No more Mosins or SKSs are being stocked....even though he never gave me a reason why .
 
"In order to protect the Canadian Tire brand and to ensure our compliance with government laws and guidelines, we are asking stores carrying firearms to recode all firearms to Corporate SKU numbers by September 5, 2016. Currently, 5000 Corporate SKUs have been created for firearms. These firearms have been approved and meet the Corporation’s standards and criteria. If you wish to stock a firearm which has not been approved for sale and/or assigned a Corporate SKU, please refer to the terms and process outlined in the Foreign Merchandise Authorization Policy."

It would seem that the Corporation doesn't want "scary assault rifles" associated with the "Canadian Tire brand".
 
Brookwood, the RC K98s at CT and the other vendors are IMHO on the high side. The adage "they've seen combat" is only partially true. Check out the history on those rifles and where a lot of them came from. Many K98s were just thrown into the grave or trenches with the bodies of those that carried them. A lot of those rifles may be refurbed battlefield pick ups or even surrender arms but many of them were in damaged warehouses and other facilities. Still, for what they represent, they are OK.

The thing that blows me away are rifles like the Vz24 which were used all through the European/African/Middle East and Asian theatres. They get almost no respect. Usually they actually have seen combat and depending on where they come from, often they are in much better condition than The RC captures. That is just one example there are others. The thing is, they are not only often in better condition but close to $300 cheaper.

Same here. They probably drink tea with their pinky out as well... can't have those 'ghastly' military weapons on the shelves... they're for killing people, don't you know.

Glad I picked up a Yugo capture K98 from Trade Ex when I did.
 
Why would you shop at canadian tire for firearms? If a store carries pliers, diapers, frying pans and tires, what makes you think they'll be any good at providing firearms, especially vintage, collectible ones? They go in every direction and specialize in nothing.

CT is good for commodities, stuff that doesn't have to be unique, stuff that's mass produced, like the average tire, the average shotgun, the average kitchen knife. But if you're looking for performance tires, vintage rifle or professional cutting knife, CT either won't carry it or will have a very little selection of it.

There's 34 sponsors listed at the top of this page. I'd bet any of them will get you something better than CT will. For vintage, collectible or anything with history, check tradeEx. The only mauser they have right now are old swedish and Yugo M98, and their best ones are sold or on hold (were 595$, much cheaper than your CT 769$), rest will need some love (but are cheap at <500$). If you drop them a line for some K98, they might send you an email next time they get a shipment.

i'd buy a firearm at CTC with all the CTC money building up on my credit card. unfortunately the last time I was ready to buy ($700 worth of money) they did not have anything other than SKSs on the shelf. I asked them to bring in K98 and was given a premium price, so bought other stuff instead.

We need to get on corp. management and tell them that k98s, mosins and the like are not scary and are what the gun community want to see. anyone have the email address for the proper person to ##### too?

I know its hard to believe, but we have a CT here that is probably better than any of those vendors. I will be very disappointed if that changes.

I love my Canadian Tire in Windsor Ont, SKS, Mosins, Mosin snipers, SVT's, Yugo M48, RC Mauser 98K, Norinco M305, K31's, and 100's of other types of rifles. And all the ammo to go with them.

They let you pick thru all the rifles to find one perfect one, and if there is a problem down the line, they have taken the rifle back and exchanged it for a different one.

No shipping and acouple of $ off because of Canadian Tire money is a plus too.
 
The only Ctc in the Ottawa area with guns is in kemptville and they only have beat up sks's for milsurps. Oh well. One more reason to keep away from Cambodian Tire and their cheap third world wares.
