I think I've fallen in love with the Smith & Wesson 617 in .22lr and I would like to buy one in the near future.

What is the fair value for a mint condition 6 inch barrel 617 ( prefer wood grips ) ?

I would also like to know if there is special things to look at when you buy one of these pistols ?

New for the 10 shot rubber grip models, they are 1000 - 1100 + tax. I would think one in mint shape could fetch 8-900.
I like the older 6 shot models with wood like you have pictured. Not sure if they would fetch a premium or not as some guys want the 10 shots.

I'm thinking the 6 shot 617s are getting pretty rare. You don't see them on the EE all that often. I think I have maybe seen 2 at most since joining.

I don't especially want a 6 shots over a 10 shots.
I choose this picture because it was looking good :p

So if the 6 shots 617's is more rare, it worth a little more...

I personally prefer the 10 shot, the k frame is a lot of revolver for a .22lr so you may as well load it up to the max.

If buying used off the top of my head I would make sure it has no signs of relentless dry firing.
Make sure it indexes on every cylinder.
Check for hammer push off.
Check for properly indexed barrel.
Check the crown.
Check for excessive endshake.
Check for a build up of lead around the forcing cone.
Make sure it hasn't been cowboy'd ie no peening of the cylinder notches or bent crane etc.
Also if buying in person bring feeler gauges to make sure the cylinder to forcing cone gap is in spec and not too tight because binding of the cylinder could happen as .22lr is fairly dirty.

I bought mine new, sight unseen from Durham Outdoors and it was mint right out of the box so buy with confidence.

I've heard there may be a timing problem with the 10 shot revolvers that eventually rears it's head. I can't personally confirm.

In regards to price, these aren't Unicorns, there were 100,000's of them made...hardly "special", however they are very well made so anywhere from $600-$800 depending on condition I would say. YMMV

Yes the 10 shooters will be way easier to find and it is not that hard find wood grips, though probably not the traditional S&W target grips for the square frame. I just don't like the look of the 10 round fluted cylinders. Aesthetic are always personal.

The gun in the second picture is quite unique as it has the fluting of a 6 shooter but holds 10.

A mint 6 shot 617 with the factory finger grooved Goncalo Alves stocks would probably be around $800-$850. That's what a few I had sold for on the EE a couple years ago. The 10 shot would be the same I think.

Mind if I give you an advice? If you can find a nice, clean Dan Wesson 722 for about $1k you should give it a hard consideration. Sold every K frame .22's I've owned and I've owned a bunch. This Dan Wesson is one of the best shooting .22 handgun I've owned, nearly as accurate as my 7-3/8" '65 vintage model 41, that's pretty hard to beat believe me.

I originally bought a 617 ( 10 round cylinder). But I sold it because I am a blued steel kind of guy so the model 17 was more my type. But I also like the full underlug look and very few 17 models have that configuration. It took some time but I found a 17-6 (6 shots) in very good condition. Old school with the recessed chambers. It is a fantastic revolver.

Yup that is a nice one !
I also like the full underlug look, that's one of the reason I'm looking for a 617.
I was not aware of this model 17 configuration.

I really like blued pistols and revolvers but I never had a Stainless handgun so I really want a 617 to be my first SS handgun.

Thanks to share this beauty !

Oh and thx guys for all the replies !
