What do you use for mosquitoes in the early season?
I'm going gun hunting for Elk in the bush next week. I hate using Off and that
kind of spray. I hate the sticky feel of it, it stinks up the place, and I won't be able to shower for
up to 10 days.
How about garlic or other natural options? I have a thermocell and I'm not impressed.
Ideas?

Arnold swartzenager used we clay as camoflauge from "the Predator" I hear it keeps the misquoted off too.

Realistically garlic or muskol

Just let them go to work on you. You'll eventually stop having a reaction. I worked this out when I was about 13. Never had a reaction since. My dad doesn't either.

Yeah, no thanks. I lay still once for 45 minutes as I watched a doe work towards me in bow season.
Next day I looked like I came 3rd in a shovel fight.

If you can find the old army stuff use that. It is 71% DEET. The next best is muskol which is only 30% DEET. When you get buy spray don't get the aerosol ones they don't work as well. The little bottles that you rub directly on your skin work so much better (especially the 71%)

There is something to be said about letting them bite you. One of the army cadet field craft manuals actually suggested letting them bite you. I tried it in army cadets and some how it worked I thought I was crazy though. It took several days of letting them bite you. I use muskol or my small reserve of the 71% for the busy bug days

I get hives from bug bites and my exczema goes nuts when in contact with some solvents (getting old is never a simple process). I use a product put out by OFF called family care insect repellant. It has a Lemon Eucalyptus extract as the active ingredient. It works, not as well as DEET, but then nothing does. I found it at CT.

There are dry sprays now... I have a couple cans of it & can honestly say I prefer the dry spray over the oily feel of the old types.

That being said, I'll use what is at hand! Friggen hate mosquitos, black flies, deer flies, noseeums!

Cheers
Jay

Muskol in combination with a thermacell works well for me. Forgot my thermacell last weekend and only had the spray. Mosquitos left me alone but got destroyed by the noseeums. Only thing that seems to work on those little bastards is the thermacell.

I've heard that permethrin works pretty good (clothing impregnated with it that is), but when all else fails...

You still have bugs out? I'm in central Ontario, and the deer flies and black flies are done. Still the odd mosquito, but nothing like they were in May. They were even getting past the bug shirt.
