Loaned out my JM stamped 1895GS to a buddy. He wanted a good backup/bear gun. So OK. Well he let it get wet and put it away in a case for basically the whole hunt. RUST! AND SMALL PITS! AARGH. But it's stainless he says, stainless doesn't rust. Well yes if it isn't looked after it does. So couple of things:

I used 00 steel wool and oil to treat the spots. It looks way better. Can this be fixed? See the pics.

I have 'Remlin' SBL that I really like....so I was considering selling this one. How much has this affected my sell price? The wood and everything is still near mint just the blemishes in the photoes.

Ya it really sucks. Rifle was near mint I had about 30 rounds through it and now this. It functions 100 % still. Pretty choked.
 
I know the feeling. I went to the range with a buddy to shoot a 300 win mag Sako A3 Finnbear Deluxe (1980ish) rifle that my dad gave to me. It was in mint condition. I did not realize that he was wearing a watch and the recoil pummelled the stock into it, chipping the signature bear head on the bottom of the pistol grip. Needless to say, I was pissed. Hope you manage to get it fixed.
 
It wouldn't be too difficult to "fix"...just needs to be bead or sand blasted depending on how deep the pitting is.
 
Well maybe I will take the receiver apart and get it blasted. They aren't too deep I don't think. Wish I had a bead blaster at home!

^^ THIS! ^^ ..... or I'd just put it back together and use it as is and chock it up to the cost of a learning curve. Guns get used and will eventually show that use. No use fretting about it now.
 
I would just put it back together and use it. Think of your friend every time you look at it. Never lend out guns or anything that you need to sharpen or anything that runs on mixed gas. Heck, don't lend anything.
 
Dad used to tell me not to borrow what I couldn't afford to replace, and not to lend what I couldn't afford to lose. Actions, or in this case inaction has consequences. Your pal will replace your rifle, or he isn't the friend you thought he was.

It's complicated. He had lost his job and is in a bit of a rough patch. He is a good guy and wants to make it good, but a replacement probably won't be in the mix, at least for a while. I had been considering selling the rifle this year as I have the SBL it just looks like I'm gonna lose my shirt. Now $400, that would be one heck of a deal! If I do sell it I just want a fair value for its condition.
 
Does one sell there Truck when they find a rock chip in the paint on the hood??
There are lots of trucks running around in Alberta that have rust holes in them ...they still drive them and use them for work or picking up chicks and stuff.
One has to do what one has to do.
BTW, how many here have biddies from the ole sandbox days?
We wouldnt even be having this discussion ..now would we?

If the rifle is still functional for its intended purpose, I'd keep it. A correctly applied Gunkote or CeraKote paint job would resolve the damage to the finish, and IMHO, make it better than original.

Rent a vehicle and put a rock chip in the windshield and see what it costs you, that might be a more reasonable analogy.

Good clue. Maybe I will get it coated. I had considered this long ago and never got around to it. If it was my only 45-70 i wouldnt even consider selling it, but I could put the funds towards another rifle. Thanks for the input guys. Live and learn!
 
I'm a horrible borrower.
Don't do it.
I'd rather go out and buy something or rent it rather than
borrow chit.
Then again, if I damaged something, I get it fixed or own it.
YMMV, but a person is only as good as their humble being.

Just like lending $$.
Don't lend to the folk unemployed oar awn welfare furr cripes sake.
