Live and learn

Don't clean stainless steel, with steel wool. You get carbon transfer all over the stainless and this rusts. Use scotch-brite pads to avoid carbon steel transfer to the stainless.

I'm a horrible borrower.
Don't do it.
I'd rather go out and buy something or rent it rather than
borrow chit.
Then again, if I damaged something, I get it fixed or own it.
YMMV, but a person is only as good as their humble being.

This ^, absolutely! Thanks for actually saying it in English, Looky. If I find myself in dire enough straits that I need to borrow something, I will damned well take proper care of it.

Just like lending $$.
Don't lend to the folk unemployed oar awn welfare furr cripes sake.

Aw, crap, there he goes again...

Rent a vehicle and put a rock chip in the windshield and see what it costs you, that might be a more reasonable analogy.

Umm, I pay for the insurance for said situations.
Buddy rented a stang once.
Yup rock chip...500.00 for the glass and another 600 for the alleged lost income while car was in the shop.
Small claims court suggested otherwise on the loss of use to the car company.

Boomer, I get the point, but some people need to learn to be responsible.
The lender or the lendee there is some accountability on either side.

But, it is Saturday morning and the Canada Post/Unionthug/bear defense threads have not started yet.
The Full moon was lastnight and the hunting season has just started...that reminds me...bloody hell I forgot where I was going with this one now.
Looky, your Up.

This is simply a gift, and I have no problem gifting when I can, all I want to know is that its made a difference. There is nothing worse than providing a gift, only to have it poured into a bottomless pit, where the recipient is no better off than he was before, and you've done little more than create a dependence that over time, demands more.

So do I . . . now. The bad news is that the glass deductible through insurance is often about the same price as replacement.

Check out MPI. They will sell you coverage for rentals for set amout of time, any rental company durring that time, anywhere in Canada, and its cheap!!! And really good coverage. If you have an issue you just call mpi. They handle the rest.

It's complicated. He had lost his job and is in a bit of a rough patch. He is a good guy and wants to make it good, but a replacement probably won't be in the mix, at least for a while. I had been considering selling the rifle this year as I have the SBL it just looks like I'm gonna lose my shirt. Now $400, that would be one heck of a deal! If I do sell it I just want a fair value for its condition.

Since you wanted to sell it anyway... Another option is to sell it to him, maybe over time, for the price it was worth before he damaged it? When he makes the last payment it's all his. He gets a good rifle he needs/wanted and you get the right price to put into a new firearm.

That's the way to go all right, its a fraction of the price charged by the rental car outfits.

So why do so many people now think they have to go stainless, if there is a chance of a rain on their hunt?
With a blued rifle the rust could have just been polished off with very fine steel wool and oil and the rifle would have looked like new again.

gotta say I agree with this ...

Does one sell there Truck when they find a rock chip in the paint on the hood??
There are lots of trucks running around in Alberta that have rust holes in them ...they still drive them and use them for work or picking up chicks and stuff.
One has to do what one has to do.
BTW, how many here have biddies from the ole sandbox days?
We wouldnt even be having this discussion ..now would we?
Rob

Bad idea to use a truck to pick up chicks. Them little baby chickens are fast, and can run under the wheels. You're better off doing it on foot! Best bet is not to let them get out of the coop or pen in the first place:)

What kind of scotch-brite pad do you suggest using? theres a bunch of different ones
Similar situation, was given a stainless steal rifle with a bit of rust on the barrel near the front sight thats starting to annoy me

I would just put it back together and use it. Think of your friend every time you look at it. Never lend out guns or anything that you need to sharpen or anything that runs on mixed gas. Heck, don't lend anything.

So fookin' true! I lend zilch to anyone, but will give to those that merit the goodies needed & if I have the excess goods to give.:)

I expected too see heaps of Red stuff, not just a wee bit.

to me wouldn't matter a Fk, to the safe queens it may be a different story..

betcha it shoots the same and is only frowned upon by the other types..

id hunt it flat out an give it a few more scars...on the wood

haha

This !! Stainless seems to be a sales gimmick, it seems to show stuff better than blueing. No advantage . Also is it just me that thinks the blueing on most new guns suck .

Looks like you got a hunting rifle you no longer need worry about a minor bump here and there.
Hope you friend that is down and out enjoyed his hunt. I'm sure he feels bad about your rifle and will make good on it some day.

As they say dont lend out you chain saw or your wife, as they'll come back $%^#ed

Good blueing, like good bake on finishes, is time consuming and expensive, and given the fact that many new rifle buyers are either cheap or broke, they aren't willing to pay the premium for a premium blueing job, on a $300 rifle. Stainless rifles can be made less expensively, because the finishing step is eliminated, whereas a carbon steel rifle must be protected from moisture in some manner, and some of these inexpensive coatings that are passed off as blued, suck. Not only are they unattractive, they scratch and rub easily, and provide little protection to the surfaces they cover.
