Wish me luck, leaving in the morning for a week in Cape Breton! A friend got drawn and asked me to be a companion hunter so a few of us are going. Thought I would never get to go as I have been applying for 20+ years and never picked ( we have the worst system here)

Pics will be coming if we are lucky!:)

Update!!

Well we hunted hard all week, weather was lousy for the first 3 days with constant heavy showers and wind making it hard to find fresh tracks. Went up 2 days before the season to get settled in.

Spent a lot of time watching spots like this but found at least 12 week old gut piles within a 5km radius and we were the first season... We were in the largest zone in Cape Breton and only 50 tags are issued for the entire season. Don't know how the herd survives with the "hunting" pressure on them, you can figure it out what I am getting at...

We only had 1 sighting all week with 5 of us all hunting and then I found lots of sign in an overgrown area, they were there but hunting would not be easy. Saw legs walking by me in the thicket on Friday night so that spurred me on. Season ended on Saturday so Sat morning my friend and I hit the thickets. Heard a cow calling half a km away so I figured that should get the bulls moving.

We were side by side in the thick spruce when we heard snapping, could only see 100 feet and there was dead spruce branches everywhere you looked. Finally 2 bulls came into sight and 1 turned sideways to us 70 feet away. We both agreed to shoot at the same one , same time. I was using a .270 and he had a .270 short mag.

1st shot was a hit and it started moving so the lead began to fly, not sure if the branches were deflecting our shots we weren't taking any chances, not on the last morning!!

A few minutes later he was down and God bless his soul he died on a road we could back the truck up to him!

The group, they were back at the camp packing up and didn't believe us at first as they didn't hear any shots due to the generator.

1st time moose hunting for me and most of the group and we made many mistakes in hunting and strategy but managed to pull it off at the 11th hour. What a rush! Regular hunting is going to seem pretty tame now. Getting the head mounted as moose hunting is very hard to get drawn for here, I have been applying for 20 years and never picked, my father never got picked either. Dropped it off at the butcher and the 4 quarters , skinned were 469 lbs.

YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good on you, Perseverance and hanging in there , Reading the Sign and BOOOM!

What projectile did you use in the 270? and your friend in the WSM? And how many times did you end up hitting it?

Cheering, will look great on the Wall

Congratulations on successful hunt OP!

BTW, did that Toyota Tacoma take all these people, moose and pull that massive trailer too?

BTW - I thought it would be difficult to Poach Moose? as the Regulators are so into it, you found a large amount of Gutpiles, I thought the Authorities would be right onto it Pre Season, especially so close to the season?

It was hard to determine the hits due to the long hair, there was one right thru just behind the front shoulder and a couple more that did not penetrate in the same area. I was using 150 grain federal premium nosler partitions, not sure what my friend with the short mag had in his.
