So CGN member Doug arrived in town late afternoon yesterday and after a brief phone call we met up to head out scouting. Now Doug and I both bordering on geriatric age opted to try to find a hunt where we could tuck ourselves in a treeline and sit on some comfy hunting chairs rather than suffer the stiff joints, aches and pains associated with hunting from layout blinds on cold ground(at our age that's what happens). So after a very short scout I found a spot I thought might work and was holding lots of birds. A quick call to the landowner and we were good to go for a crack at getting Doug his first snow goose. The field was holding a mix of snows, canadas, specks and oodles of ducks.
I picked Doug up the this morning at 6 am. We loaded 3 dozen canada decoys, two dozen blues and a dozen snow decoys into the truck and set off. When we arrived at the field we found a good little spot to hide and set about putting out or small spread. I parked the truck a few hundered yards away tucked into the tree line to hide it and made my way back to our hiding spot. Half way back I hear wings overhead and look up in the early morning overcast sky mixed with snow to see a pair of mallards headed for the spread. I waited but no shots rang out. Upon arrival Doug was busy getting nested in and I found out he is half deaf and never heard the birds passing overhead, I personally think its all the hair blocking his ears and not clinical deafness! Anyways we both got settled in, loaded our guns and went on high alert for incoming waterfowl. We did not have to wait long and for hours the sky was full of birds never leaving us without a moments entertainment. The first birds to work us were a small flock of Specks and when I called the shot Doug immediately connected with and folded clean his first ever Specklebelly goose and it was a real nice mature adult bird adorned with a chest of beautiful bars and bright orange feet. Doug was all smiles as he looked at the bird. After we dumped a pair of Mallards a flock of three Snows piled into us and at 20 yards out I called the shot. I hit one as Doug slammed another and the third one drifted off wounded after a few shots at it that were not our best performance. We found the bird about 1/4 mile down field and recovered it. We passed up on alot of shots trying to get better angles and sub 30 yard range to shoot in. We finally packed it in around 10:30 am with 19 birds. Not tooo shabby for a couple of fencerow geriatric hunters with only 6 dozen decoys tossed out.
So in the end this was our second time meeting up, the first 10 years ago at a gun show. Doug was my first CGN EE deal( popped my cherry). This was our first hunt together. I am glad I was able to put him onto his first Snow and his first Speck and have to say it was a spectacular morning shared with a real gentleman of a hunter and heck of a nice guy. Looking forward to tomorrows adventure already!

Doug with a couple of firsts, a beauty of a speck and nice adult snow!

This quote shows a coincidence. "Doug was my first CGN EE deal".

Doug was also my first deal on the EE!
I had a single barrel 12 gauge and a beat up, painted up SMLE. In the course of our messages, I told him the 303 wasn't worth a pinch of coon manure.
He said any Le Enfield is worth something, and a deal evolved.
Doug and I had a good visit for a few hours at our house, when he was in BC. He said he had forgot my description of the rifle, but that was what I told him about it.

We did a trade years back on a shotgun for a rifle. Great guy to deal with and lots of fun to hunt and hang out with. Hoping to put him on a good mallard field shoot in the a.m.

I think he ate that golldang Cleo furr bate hisself to judge by the number of times he spent hunkered down in the treeline today trousers 'round his ankles and making wierd duck calling sounds!! :sok2

Yes indeed that was an AWESOME hunt, and all the sweeter for the fact that it was not going to happen. Frank has been working without any days off for over a month and it looked like we would not be able to put a hunt together, much to my dismay.

BUT!!! He worked through his last set of "days off" and had some free time when I could be down there. AWESOME again! :d

It has been a pleasure renewing an acquaintance and dare I say starting a friendship.

And yes folks, I have done a LOT of "first deals" with guys on here. And I have done a few other deals with people too.............

And what a hunt that was!!!!!

Doug

sounds like an awesome time, congrats on the fowl guys. Looks like the snow melted out there! Doug was my 12th deal here and have had many since.
