So CGN member Doug arrived in town late afternoon yesterday and after a brief phone call we met up to head out scouting. Now Doug and I both bordering on geriatric age opted to try to find a hunt where we could tuck ourselves in a treeline and sit on some comfy hunting chairs rather than suffer the stiff joints, aches and pains associated with hunting from layout blinds on cold ground(at our age that's what happens). So after a very short scout I found a spot I thought might work and was holding lots of birds. A quick call to the landowner and we were good to go for a crack at getting Doug his first snow goose. The field was holding a mix of snows, canadas, specks and oodles of ducks.
I picked Doug up the this morning at 6 am. We loaded 3 dozen canada decoys, two dozen blues and a dozen snow decoys into the truck and set off. When we arrived at the field we found a good little spot to hide and set about putting out or small spread. I parked the truck a few hundered yards away tucked into the tree line to hide it and made my way back to our hiding spot. Half way back I hear wings overhead and look up in the early morning overcast sky mixed with snow to see a pair of mallards headed for the spread. I waited but no shots rang out. Upon arrival Doug was busy getting nested in and I found out he is half deaf and never heard the birds passing overhead, I personally think its all the hair blocking his ears and not clinical deafness! Anyways we both got settled in, loaded our guns and went on high alert for incoming waterfowl. We did not have to wait long and for hours the sky was full of birds never leaving us without a moments entertainment. The first birds to work us were a small flock of Specks and when I called the shot Doug immediately connected with and folded clean his first ever Specklebelly goose and it was a real nice mature adult bird adorned with a chest of beautiful bars and bright orange feet. Doug was all smiles as he looked at the bird. After we dumped a pair of Mallards a flock of three Snows piled into us and at 20 yards out I called the shot. I hit one as Doug slammed another and the third one drifted off wounded after a few shots at it that were not our best performance. We found the bird about 1/4 mile down field and recovered it. We passed up on alot of shots trying to get better angles and sub 30 yard range to shoot in. We finally packed it in around 10:30 am with 19 birds. Not tooo shabby for a couple of fencerow geriatric hunters with only 6 dozen decoys tossed out.
So in the end this was our second time meeting up, the first 10 years ago at a gun show. Doug was my first CGN EE deal( popped my cherry). This was our first hunt together. I am glad I was able to put him onto his first Snow and his first Speck and have to say it was a spectacular morning shared with a real gentleman of a hunter and heck of a nice guy. Looking forward to tomorrows adventure already!
