I'm looking to buy and set up a mossberg 590 a1 for my first forray into 3 gun shooting. Does anyone have recommendations for configuration/accessories?
First thing to do is get a mag tube extension. You don't need to go as long as mine below but extra rounds are always a good thing - plus a longer mag tube means reduced spring pressure which means it's easier to stuff shells in.
Having the barrel threaded for chokes is a good next move.
Oversized safety is another inexpensive and easy mod. I also replaced the stock and foregrip with a rubberized hogue set which makes it nice and grippy in all kinds of weather.
Light tube front sight is also a nice addition. The big orange stock front sight is ok but replacing it makes the world of difference on tight shots or slug shots.
Dremeling out the loading port makes loading easier as well.
Here is my 590 that I use for 3 gun. The long mag tube gets a few laughs but being able to hold 16-17 rounds has its advantages, not the least of which is that my forearms get a good workout at each match

Running fools setup is pretty much how I ran mine when I had one, except my tube wasn't nearly as long.
Chokes are pretty critical, so get the tube to someone like tacord as soon as possible.
Polishing the wear surfaces on the bolt and bolt carrier can help as well

I like the COEXIST sticker!
I don't run a mag extension on mine. It seems that most of the time we start with an empty mag or with just 5 rounds in the tube.
What would be a more typical length for the mag extension?
It is nice but not nearly as nice as the guy who gave it to me![]()
You'll want to start with the 20" barrel version, which comes with a 8+1 capacity.
Then add the "Plus 2" extension from S&J Hardware.
That gives you a 10+1 capacity. Which is very good.
Also getting the barrel threaded for screw in chokes is mandatory.
Heavy steel plates will not go down with birdshot and a cylinder bore barrel.
That would be really, really lame.
RunningFool do you ever accidentally knock over a close target with that tube![]()
There are occasional times when we start with a loaded mag, but most often we don't start fully loaded.
Why?
Stevo...
You would have to ask the Match Directors that question. Perhaps they are trying to level the playing field.
I do know I get plenty more loading practice that way!![]()
