Transfer times vary from place to place.....it seems. But imho, it's a two way street. Remember that the buyer has the responsibility to follow up with the CFO and confirm his/her information. Every restricted purchase I've ever done, I've been proactive and called the CFO. Almost immediately after I receive the transfer request reference number, I call and confirm my information. In most cases the transfer is approved in less than 1 day.
My best result was buying a handgun in the morning of a weekday. Then getting the reference number from the store after they initiate the transfer with the CFO. I called the CFO immediately to confirm my information. And within 5 minutes, the transfer was approved and the notice e-mailed to my phone. I then walked out of the store with my new gun. Total time....less than 1 hour.
Again, it has been my experience that being proactive really speeds things up. Even with private sales, doing your part speeds things up.
