Picture of the day

Out of curiosity I tried Google Earth as "MARAD Reserve Fleet at Suisun Bay", and did not find any Navy vessels.

There was wording; "Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet" but no ships.

The image was dated 12/31/1969.

Call Orson and H.G. Welles! The Martians are here!

If I didn't know better I swear I'd say that was photo-shopped. I can't believe that was the design the american army actually chose to produce. An armoured vehicle designed strait out of current comic books I bet. Great Photo!

If you zoom in on the Suisin Bay Reserve Fleet in Google earth, you'll see that there ARE ships there, but they are blurred out, and some are 'painted' out. Zooming in all the way you can see how the imagery has been mucked with.

Go to: 38.04.049.27N and 122.05.13.60W. eye altitude of 815 feet and you'll see some of the artifacts.

When I look at that Tracklayer I see direct translation of the USS Monitor idea from 50 years before to dry land operation.

Idea of a land ship is not new, what was new is building it on top of tracked tractor powered by powerful internal combustion engine.

Silly looking tank of not remember where planes were in 1916 and where are they now.

Turret Crawl

Firings

The unfortunate sailers on the Iowa are lucky they didn't know what happened to them when their turret exploded. It just goes to demonstrate in the close confines these guys work in that any kind of detonation would be catastrophic.

An emergency main ballast tank blow is a procedure used aboard a submarine that forces high-pressure air into its main ballast tanks. The high-pressure air forces ballast water from the tanks, quickly lightening the ship so it can rapidly rise to the surface.
