I bought an SBL a couple years ago, looked ok in the store, but the front sight post is canted and the inside of the barrel looks like it was made with a leatherman. The barrel has so much scaring and tool chatter marks (I know, inspect the thing before you buy it. Well, I know that now, anyway), its practically a miracle it shoots at all. As it is, accuracy is *OK*, but pretty substandard for a new and pricey gun. It also leads up with cast boolits at a shocking rate. What I am looking to find out is who make a reasonably priced (and of decent quality) replacement barrel? I have the 18.5" barrel, and would like to keep it that way. I love the gun but hate how it shoots. Any ideas out there?

Sell it and buy a Henry. I'd try Jerry at Mystic precision. He may know where to find a barrel. If not he could supply a blank for a Smith to cut and thread

Contact the Gravel Agency - Marlin's Canadian importer and distributor

They might even help you if your story is convincing. I've had them replace a Remington 700 out of warranty because of a slightly damaged crown.

Just had a look through the owner's manual for my 1895XLR and there is nothing specific about the use of hand-loaded ammunition voiding the warranty. Interesting that there is a FAQ in regard to reloading information -

Unlike most other firearm manufacturers, it appears the use of hand-loads doesn't void the warranty.

However, in the literature it states that if they determine the cause of the defect is the result of neglect or abuse then the owner will be responsible for the repair cost.

So, an update on the guide gun situation. I sent it in to the gravel agency, and heard back from them today that marlin will replace the firearm. I am very grateful and impressed with marlin/gravel agency, and, pending receipt of my new gun, happy with the timeliness of the response. Good job gravel/marlin.

What you describe was very common for a year or so after Remington took over marlin and moved all the tooling etc...The quality of "Remlins" was horrible, canted sights and tool chatter in the barrel were the most common complaints.

Marlin had being putting out rifles with canted sights and chattered bores (particularly stainless) for years before the take over. I've had some made as far back as 1998 with these issues.

Good to hear! I hope they have a look at the new one before they ship it.
Looking forward to hearing the final outcome.

Very good! As they should in accordance with the warranty. It's the principle of the matter.

So, I recently shot the gun. It shoots well, accuracy is decent. sights are in line with the gun, all is well. Also, the action is much smoother than the previous gun. All in all, Im happy with the replacement.

How were you able to tell that the front sight was canted? I bought a GBL last year, and something seems off when I look down the sights. I think the front sight may be canted ever so slightly. It doesn't look canted, when I look at, but again when I sight down the barrel something is off. Is there some way to establish whether it is canted or not?

Clamp the rifle in a vice with padded jaws.
Level the thing and how do the sights look in comparison to the
leveled rifle?
A few different ways to proof level.
Scope base with level across it and how do the sights sit in relation
to the base?
I guess with the scope and rings removed, eye ball the front sight with
the middle of the scope base?
