Baofeng UV-5R

I found a form with the frs channels and just copy/ pasted onto chirp. As far as I can see the Baofengs are TX and receiving on the same frequency, only issue is the Motorola can't talk to the baofeng. The baofeng screen lights up and shows there is a transmission received but no sound.

DCS/CTSS aren't set right. I'm pretty sure for FRS they should be off, you must have one or the other on.

Yes I would agree with this. I was trying to replicate the problem with my Cobra and UV5R and the only time I would transmit on the Cobra and the receive light would come on on the UV5R but no sound would come through was when I would have DCS or CTSS on the UV5R. Either one would have the same result. Setting them both to OFF would allow it to receive the sound properly. They are menu 10 and menu 11 if you are setting them manually without chirp. R-DCS and R-CTSS (the receive settings not the T-DCS and T-CTSS which are the transmit settings).

Get an SMS to BNC adapter. This makes dozens of hand held antennas usable on the Baofeng. Use a plumbing tap washer as a spacer to take up the gap between the connector and radio body. This takes strain off the radios antenna input jack. Even the Nagoya can use one.

Thanks for the suggestion btw. So, the search continues for an authentic antenna. Anyone have any experience with the Diamond RH77CA? or a Comet perhaps?

Ok, finally had time to download n try n get Chirp n the cable software working. Well that was fun! I think most of my probs were related to a Windows version that I find very user-unfriendly,,windows 8! Disaster.
But I finally got everything goin n now just have to add my selected frequencies. Thanks for the previous tidbits of advice guys!

In my case, I had already input the names using Chirp...then it was just a matter of using the instructions that Cranky Pants posted so that names would show up.

Did you use Chirp yet and name your chosen frequencies? If yes, after u get to menu 21 or 22, use the up or down arrow until the "name" option appears, then hit menu again to confirm.

No cable .
Successfully did all my programing manually .

Ahhh... I did that first,,didn't have the time to mess around with the cable and it's driver and Chirp. No idea if you can name a channel without using Chirp....although I think one of the numerous YouTube vids I've viewed, mentioned it cant be done manually. I'll try looking into it for you.

Just found a second source indicating that naming channels is only possible using other software.... So. I guess you need a cable. :(

I could send you mine to use, up to you. But I'm sure after you're done, you will find other channels you want to input and name.

Thanks for the offer of a loan but I'm sure I can find one online somewhere .
I want to pick up an external mike as well . I tried the mike off my M Tech MT 80 & it worked

These don't require a license if you use frs/gmrs frequencies, but to broadcast on pretty much any other frequency requires a license. No license and they are just complicated frs radios, so you aught to get the license. You can listen to the vhf/uhf frequencies, just not allowed to broadcast.

Because the frequencies are user selectable, power is above 2 watts and the antenna is removable, a radio license is required for transmission in Canada with these radios.
