Crossbow grouse

How so ?..........it blew right through. The prongs deliver blunt trauma and flips the arrow so they don't slide under the leaves.
The "Judo" points were copies from Cabela's........great for smacking gophers too.
We got 10 ruffs and a spruce #### this am mostly with 20ga and 28ga........one with the crossbow and one with the 2240 pistol carbine.Harold

I've shot a couple hundred grouse with bows while archery hunting for moose... I always keep one judo arrow in the quiver during small game season... I've also lost a lot of arrows... makes you wonder if the grouse was worth $15 and 20 minutes of your time...

Well entertainment is not usually free..if you add up gas/licenses/equipment etc.....Harold

I mean compared to a limit of grouse at lunch time with pellet guns... it was a rare day up north that we didn't clean a limit of birds... bird fingers for breakfast, birds and beans for lunch, bird stirfry on a bed of wild rice for supper... and then start over the next day... throw in a feed of walleye fillets here and there to break it up.

Just my experience...... these were not designed to "go right through"..... they were designed to hit and stop.....

That being said, youbhave some nice, unaffected meat there.....

The heads were not designed for crossbow velocity likely.......

As per Hoyt's post above, I have lost way too many arrows, and broadheads to boot...... just because I had to try and couldn't resist....

Here is a wingshot my son made with a judo point a few years ago...

Did it penetrate the breast?..... doesnt look like it..... Looks like the heads performed as designed......

Back when I had enough time to dedicate to bow, I took a couple rabbits, groundhogs and a ruffie with a blunt head.......

I also experimented with fru fru arrows and a recurve, and while I was successful, it was to accomplish a goal and nothing more..... "ya, I got one, now where is my shotgun"..... lol

May not be designed for crossbows but it works....slip on rubber blunts were NFG RE : ricochets and gophers ended up on the fletching when hit......at 305 fps Judos should go through.I guess the wire loop bird head would work but would also be a PITA to slip trough openings in the thick bush..............you can eat right up to the arrow anyways......I won't be shooting at anything off the ground for safety reasons..Harold

Sorry Harold...... but that was a great shot with a crossbow...... but certainly not the advertised experience expected for those heads shooting from a regular bow...... that's all I was saying....... and your grouse is certainly entirely edible......

Just pointing out that heads designed for "bows" are not necessarily meant for x-bow....

i don't think flu flu arrows would ride on the deck of a crossbow so launching arrows into the sky would be rather reckless........hence the ground only shooting policy.Don't need to ventilate a range cow or oil worker. And I have far more range than a shotgun with birdshot.I may try one of the turkey guillotine arrow heads..flying scissors......just a little off the top.......Harold

We don't shoot rifles willy-nilly into the air... or broadhead tipped arrows from 70# hunting bows... but if you use the right equipment, it is perfectly safe... long, solid glass arrows that leave the point ahead of the frame/riser, equipped with distended feathers and an appropriate aerial head and you are all set... it is a lot of fun... not into crossbows personally, but have used longbows, recurves and compounds to wingshoot upland birds and waterfowl... not methods you would employ to keep the family fed, but as I said... "FUN!"

Due to an accident years ago ,[severed ulner nerve] conventional archery equipment is not something I can pursue. So this leaves crossbows.......I have all the paperwork to use one legally here in AB. There is a guy in the States who is an exhibition shooter that can shoot thrown aspirin tablets with a traditional bow.Name escapes me but he's amazing............Harold

Byron Ferguson.... and yes, he is really good....

Byron Ferguson.... and yes, he is really good....

I have seen Byron shoot... quarters, dimes, asprin and foam disks (3 at a time before they hit the ground).

That ain't me... my ultimate archery/wingshooting day was three roosters in SoDak... two of which were on the wing and the other was running in cattails... if you have ever tried shooting an arrow through cattails, you know that was the more remarkeable shot.
