If he can stretch dad's budget a little, the Savage bolt action rifled 20 gauge is $700 at Cabelas.

I own a Remington 1100 semi auto and I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. They don't operate reliably unless you shot a heavy load. That nullifies any recoil advantage they have. New, they are expensive too. A 22" rifled barrel slug gun is much more suitable for close range deer hunting.
 
Would look at the combo packages by mossberg or remington. If you could try a 12 hu it might be better in the end and latter years. Might have to look at reduced loads if this would be an option
 
then why did the 1100s DOMINATE the t&s competitions for so many years- before the benellis and berettas came along it was870's and 1100s- that's the WAY your 1100 is set up ie a duck/goose gun instead of t&s- probably a full choke or 3 inch chamber- as for expensive most 1100s can be had for a song- ie 300 these days as everyone has gone to steel and they're still set for LEAD
 
Remington 870 express deer i shoot clover leaf slug at 50m and well under 4inch at 100m supported
And you can buy a barrell for the bird hunt of your choice

I suspect it will, it's a great firearm. Doesn't recoil too bad either.

Comes with rifle sights installed already, and easy to mount a scope on the rail on top. Might have to pin a mag if your province requires less than 5 round magazines, but that's really easy.
 
How the f*** would anyone hunt grouse with that thing?....... since we are encouraging a young hunter, my first reaction is "wtf".......

My second reaction is that he would have a brick dedicated for deer here ..... A combo setup with cantilever would be much better..... and much more versatile.....

My third reaction is again "wtf"..... even at that price, that thing looks like a heavily beaten red headed stepchild......is that something you would want your first born son to do his first hunt with?

i picked up a weatherby sa-08 for my wife a couple of years ago, and after shooting it my self several times, i really like it and prefer it over my 12 gauge most of the time. Its a great gun, but some times the 12 is called upon a little more often...Im not saying to go for a 12, but keep in mind that a shooting jacket(as previously stated) may help if you go that rout, and over time you'll get use to the recoil. any ways thats my two cents, and i hope yo have fun hunting!

I thought we were talking shotgun deer hunting here? Although you would hunt grouse by putting whatever choke you want in it and going hunting. These shotguns certainly aren't "bricks" they are fun, fast and comfortable to aim and shoot

I guess some hunters are still really hung up on firearms that stray from traditional wood/blue. I remember when synthetic stocked rifles first starting up, how horrified some guys were. I guess some things never change. Lots of folks look at firearms like that and think "cool" -but different people like different things.

Not at all..... I have black guns myself.......

and ya, a tactical shotgun can take a deer, I took several with a cooey 84 back in the day, as it was all I had... if you can take one with that, you can take one with any shotgun....

But, OP obviously has a budget, and we should be encouraging him to buy a versatile gun, not a one species wonder........ A switch barrel fits
 
Your dad would put up 600, but doesnt stop you from putting 1-200 of your own to get what you want.

I would get a rifled 20ga pump for you budget and may still squeeze a scope into the total cost. Or a smooth bore if you plan on hunting birds also.

Just want to add you will find more ammo options for a 12 gauge and if you fire 2 3/4" ammo your recoil will be close to the same as a 20gauge. Gun model and most importantly, at this time of year availability will be better for 12 ga offerings.

I would suggest to you possibly a Mossberg 500 3 barrel combo gun it would be a one gun battery for all your shotgunning c/w 24" cantilever rifled slug barrel, 24" turkey barrel and 26" waterfowl barrel and 4 choke tube Full mod, ic and x-full turkey. And it would be in your price range specs. Although you'd need a scope for the slug barrel......if dad will swing it for you?

Oh yeah one more thing go to a good gun shop and pick up a few different guns and be sure they fit you. You can test that by closing your eyes, shoulder the gun....when you open your eyes you should be looking straight down the barrel at the bead, no craning your neck or readjusting your cheekweld to the stock. If you have to do that the gun does not fit. A good gun counter person can help but be sure you trust them, crummy ones will do anything to get the sale. Bring dad along for a Bullsh+* monitor.

I'm more likely to encourage him to get a part time job so he can buy himself more guns in the future, rather than saddle him with a jack of all trades.

Besides- it's only a one species shotgun if you want it to be. I've got a 12 g in the same style, a MKA 1919. If I was hunting in one of our shotgun zones I would have a magazine with 00 buckshot (BC shotgun zones don't allow slugs) and another mag with 7.5's if I bumped into some grouse.

See if you can find a used semi in 12ga they do not kick very much even with slugs a old a 1100, a301 or superx1 would be in that price range.

Sorry dude...... that thing you posted is an abortion in regards to hunting versatility.....it's meant to hit a target precisely at the limited range of a shotgun...... and as someone that lives in a "shotgun only" zone, like the OP, I can tell you that shotgun is a wizz poor choice....

But I do agree with you 100% as far as savings...... he can do better........ and it won't cost much more than... $600
