Whats the difference between the two? I mean more from a hunting aspect. Which one is better for larger game. Is one more flat shooting and better for longer distances than the other?

7mm refers to a bore diameter and 7mm-08 is a cartridge that uses a 7mm bullet. There are many 7mm cartridges: 7mm-08, 7x57, .284 Win, .280 Rem, 7mm Rem Mag, 7x61 S&H, 7mm Wby Mag, 7mm STW etc.

I'm gonna take a guess that you want to compare the 7mm remington magnum to the 7-08. The 7 rem mag is going to shoot further, flatter and faster. That comes with a significant trade off in recoil. The 7-08 is known for being a soft recoiling round, and for most hunting it is perfectly sufficient. With the right bullet and shot placement, at under 200 yards, I have no doubt a 7-08 could take a moose or elk. The 7 rem mag can do that out past 400 yards.

Yes that's what I was looking for. Thanks.

exactly! It burns me up when they say what caliber is that, when I know they are really asking what cartridge! But, what ya gonna do! I think I'm gonna start doing what you do!

At 400 yards my 7mm-08 loads are doing 2200fps and carrying 1460 ft/lbs of energy. It is often stated that 1400 ft/lbs is what is needed for elk. So many people under estimate what the little 7 is capable of.

And this is why some people do stupid things, like shooting 300winmag loads in 300wby rifles. Using the correct terminology avoids confusion.

Or you can go in between with an excellent all around 7mm cartridge - The 284 Winchester. Unfortunately it is not so popular.

Or even stupider . . . shooting 7mm Remington Mag in a 300 Win Mag.
Cartridge nomenclature is a world onto itself . . . Imperial, Metric and spinoffs of both. The 280 Remington was rebirthed as the 7mm Express, aborted and brought back to life as the 280 Remington.

My 280 Remington starts the 140 grain Barnes TTSP at 3000+ and should be good to 450 yards.

Availability of factory ammo should be studied at your LGS. Volumes of 7mm RM but not so much in 7mm08, 280 Rem, 7 x 57, 7mm Weatherby and 7mm STW. A good reloading manual will also be your friend.

I like the 7mm bores. [What am I saying? I like all rifles, lol]
I have at present 7x57, 280 Remington, 7mmSAUM, 7mm Rem Mag.
Have owned 7-08's, 7-08AI, 7mm Weatherby's, 7mm STW's, 7mm WSM, 280 Ross, 7mm Rem Ultramag, and probably a couple of others.
They are deadly within their given limitations, and a big 7 with the 175 grain bullet gives up very little to the 30's crowd.
What is not to like? I watched a fellow shoot a cow elk at 420 yards with a 7-08 and the 140 Accubond. 2 shots, 2 hits and the elk was down.
Either shot would have done the job. Dave.

and to think I was just about to advertise my 100/284 for sale! The buttstock is too long for me, I hate to cut it down, I have other rifles that I can hunt with, not sure what to do!

I think that's a little under estimated, many folks say it is a hammer at 500 yards!

Pretty hard to beat the 7mm Rem Mag.

It is popular enough to find on most store shelves.

The 7mm-08 is excellent round but not too popular when compared to 308,30-06,300 win mag, and. 270. So finding ammo at times will be a challenge, unless you live in city.

IF your keeping your range under 300 yards and you want to handloaded go for 08.

If your shooting past 300....and want to shoot factory ammo..... 7mm Rem Mag is where you want to be.

A lot of it started with the RCMP and the Canadian Firearms Course... they use 'caliber' and 'cartridge' interchangeably and specifically ask for 'caliber' when they actually want and expect 'cartridge designation'. As a firearms instructor I argued with those in the bureaucracy of the firearms course who make the decisions of content, to no avail.

I like the 7x57 (aka 7mm Mauser or 275 Rigby). Similar ballistics to the 7mm-08. Zastava makes a nice fullstock carbine.
