7mm and 7mm-08

7mm-08 140gr Partition @ 2916 fps
200y zero
400y drop = 20.3", 2158 fps / 1447 ft lbs (what a 7mm Rem Mag would land with @ 550 yards)
*7mm Mag would drop 20.3" @ 430y)

7mm Rem Mag 140gr Partition @ 3253 fps
200y zero
400y drop = 15.8", 2438 fps / 1848 ft lbs (what 7mm-08 would land with @ 240 yards)
*7mm08 would drop 15.8" @ 370y)

This is one way to put a bit of reality into the discussion - 7mm RM basically adds 150 yards to the 7mm-08's performance.

I have a 7-08, 7x57, and a 7RM. If I had to ditch one, it would be the 7-08. 7x57 is a classic and outperforms the 7-08 in a modern rifle.
If I could only keep one, it would be the 7RM, recoil is pretty mild, and it will launch the heavier high BC bullets at respectable velocity.

I load the 175gr Sierra GameKing SBT bullet at 2550 fps MV and get sub-MOA accuracy using Reloder22 in my 7x57 Zastava Carbine. Not bad for a 20" barrel.

I am only looking to use it for deer hunting. Light bullets in the 130 gr 140 gr range. I have a. 300 Win Mag for anything heavier that needs to be chucked down range.

There all GOOD ! but you need to shoot them in YOUR rifle to see what it likes - It can get expensive to find the right Factory Load ! RJ

^This. In my limited experience (and I'm sure many others) I've had rifles that will shoot most anything into nice 1 inch groups and I've had others that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn loaded up down or sideways. My 7mm-08 I've had since childhood, was my first deer rifle, loves Hornady Superformance 139grain. Prints good on paper and produces good on tablefare.

Ok good to know. I have one with a compact 20 in barrel. Shouldn't be too much loss in velocity but better handling in the bush.

Nah the NZ dudes chop their barrels an use suppressor "Cans", they call the rifle "Bush pigs" google em , some still shoot out to 300-400m ... more of a scrub gun when lopped as low as 16 inch but generally I think 18 is common.. my Kimber is 22 inch, which is the standard it seems so a 20 inch compact with a 140gr Woodleigh and Varget would still have plenty for 300ms!

TTSX are proberly more affordable to shoot in your neck of the woods and going to a 120gr might be wise in a compact to keep it tame and still give you a very workable trajectory !

From my own experience, it's much easier to safely hit 3400fps with a 140gr pill in the 7RM then it is to hit 2900fps with the same bullet in the 7-08.

I agree... all of the load testing I have done with both cartridges would support that perspective as far closer to "the truth."
