I have an older (1975) Beretta O/U (BL2) with 30" barrels and fixed chokes (mod & full). It's nearly useless to me in this configuration. I'd prefer shorter barrels and more open chokes. Aside from the extra versatility of multiple choke options that come with screw-in chokes (not a big deal to me, as I typically put in a couple of the more open tubes and leave them forever), what are the advantages of taking a couple inches off and tapping the barrels for screw-in chokes as opposed to having the chokes of both barrels opened up a bit? Relative cost of each procedure? I suppose there's the option of simply lopping off a few inches and having cylinder bores, but I would like a bit more reach in at least one of the barrels. Thoughts?

Depends on the final use. I dropped 2 blue bills yesterday at 40/45 yards with a 22" cyl barrel Remington 1100. I wouldn't use it for trap but skeet 5 stand and hunting I see no downside to short cyl barrels. It will be your cheaper option depending on how the mid ribs attach.
The chokes can be reamed but take it to a good gunsmith. I've seen a few change poi after being reamed. Tapping for chokes and then buying said chokes is not a cheap way to go
Cutting barrels and re attaching a bead $100-150
Reaming out the barrel $60-125 each. I'm not sure if they're chrome lined
Chokes depends on the style needed and chokes used

30" barrels on an O/U are not that awkward or much of a liability for the majority of target sports or hunting.

You can have the chokes opened for $ 125 - $ 150. Choke tubes for about double that, if there's enough material, thin-walls might be a little more.

Why not try I/Cyl & Mod or Skeet & Light Mod. I do very well in the field with a 30" double with .007" and .015" chokes ... and it's still quite suitable for
2-3/4" steel loads ... if you have to use them.

Hey, I know a choke tube manufacturer company in USA. If anybody needs choke tubes to put in your gun while clay shooting then you can order superior quality of choke tubes from ww w.jimmymullers.com.

They likely are chrome plated. The cheapest option might be to lop off a small amount of the barrel to open the constriction to mod/ic. A little bit of experimentation would be needed to get the right amount, but you wouldn't be having to deal with the chrome issue.
