Thank you. Is that Quick Load?

At 400 yards my 7mm-08 loads are doing 2200fps and carrying 1460 ft/lbs of energy. It is often stated that 1400 ft/lbs is what is needed for elk. So many people under estimate what the little 7 is capable of.

Now this is something I did not realize. I have a 7mm mag and a 7X57. The 7mm's are my favorite but I am thinking of selling the mag to buy a light weight rifle in a softer caliber. My 7X57 is a CZ 550 and it weights a lot. I didn't realize what the 7mm-08 could do. Maybe a Tikka syn in that caliber is what I am looking for. Thanks

I have a t3 and a win m70 both in 7mm-08. Love that caliber. Put a b&c stock on the t3 next year it will be getting a new pipe and stay 7mm-08. I also have loaded 162gr eld-x in the tikka. Getting 2675fps out of it with those.

I get all of the ballistic masturbation in this thread...... I also understand that some people have their favorite cartridges, and that is cool.....

What I don't get is why 7-08 fans feel the need to equate their cartridge with a 7mm Mag....... they are two different cartridges...... regardless of bullet diameter..........

I love my 7-08, and have an affinity for .308 based cartridges...... but can fully realize that it won't do what a 7 mag will do at long range....

As much as I am a novice reloader, and am more than happy to best factory loads in accuracy and sometimes velocity, i pick horses for courses.......

I guess what most of us are trying to say is that during 99% of hunting applications and scenarios is that it doesn't make a lot of difference.Not many hunters take shots or are even competent taking shots at the ranges that most chamberings can down animals effectively.

I am simply stating my findings from my testing.

The lighter bullets on average are within 150 ft/sec difference, heck even the Hodgdon reloading site numbers are within this.When they start to get heavier the 160's and heavier will get pushed a bit better.

Now if you were going to compare a 30-30 vs 300WM for open prairie shooting, yes that is a topic that would bring some debate to application.

Like I stated before, I find that in my experience from loading and chronographing is that the 7RM tests slightly less than anticipated and the 7/08 comes out slightly more, not of each other but what is kind of expected out of each cartridge.

I guess we can also argue efficiency all day long as well if we so desire.None of the animals shot yet seem to know the difference anyways.

Again to the OP , find a rifle you like and fits you , then choose a chambering, neither one will fail you.

If a lighter bullet, say 140 (my 7-08 staple) only nets you 150 fps difference between the 08 and the mag then you have either maxed out the -08 or you are not using the mag tomits full potential..... even book loads do better than that.....

Alts I know is that, for me, the 7mm-08 is much more of a pleasant rifle to shoot than is the 7mm Mag. They both kill well and the 7mm Mag that I owned got sold only for that reason.

avg of top 5 performing powders :

7mm08 - 2916 fps
7mm Rem Mag - 3252 fps

difference = 336 fps. What does that mean in the real world? I gotta go eat dinner , discuss :cool:

You gents are missing the obvious four key points:
1. the 7mm-08 is the friendliest (or schizo) cartridge as it encompasses both metric and imperial standards;
2. the 7mm-08 shoots so gentle that can double wield;
3. there is the 7.62x39, .308, and .300WSM if need something milder or wilder (in .30 caliber cartridges); and,
4. the 7mm-08 has a pink stock (twice the accuracy of a black stock)

358 fps difference between the average of top 5 performing powders. Not much different than the 140gr comparison. Also note top velocity 7mm-08 175gr load with RL17 @ 2654 fps -- Federal Premium 7mm Rem Mag 175gr Trophy Bonded Bear Claw spec velocity is 2700 fps :rolleyes:

7mm-08 140gr Partition @ 2916 fps
200y zero
400y drop = 20.3", 2158 fps / 1447 ft lbs (what a 7mm Rem Mag would land with @ 550 yards)
*7mm Mag would drop 20.3" @ 430y)

7mm Rem Mag 140gr Partition @ 3253 fps
200y zero
400y drop = 15.8", 2438 fps / 1848 ft lbs (what 7mm-08 would land with @ 240 yards)
*7mm08 would drop 15.8" @ 370y)

Anyone recommend a good factory ammo for the 7mm-08? Just bought one but am not a handloader yet.
