There used to be a thread where this challenge was held at a range in Ontario and it always seemed like a fun idea to me to have an online version of it.

Well fall is here with winter just around the corner. I was out shooting today in the rain and figured this was something that could be done even in cold, wet conditions to get us out shooting and practicing our skills this winter.

The objective: Shoot 10 rounds into a group measuring under 3 inches at 300 yards (274.3 meters).

There will be three categories:

Successfully shot under 3".
Successfully shot under 2".
Successfully shot under 1".

The rules:

- Your group must contain 10 rounds.
- You must shoot at 300 yards.
- You must show a picture of the whole target and it cannot contain any other holes than the 10 round group shown.
- You cannot have anything obscuring part of the target.
- The goal is to shoot under 3" at 300 yards. This makes the max allowable group size 2.999".
- Measure your group outside to outside with calipers and subtract the bullet diameter. If that comes out to 2.999" or less it qualifies for this challenge.
- Provide a picture of the calipers laid over the target confirming group size and show your calculations.
- On Target group calculating software is also acceptable in lieu of measuring with calipers.
- List the calibre, rifle, weather conditions and shooting position used (rifle pics are optional but encouraged).
- Any caliber is allowed, even .50 cal (bring on the boomers!!).
- Shoot it any way you like (prone, bench, ect).
- Use any paper target you like.
- Use any rifle you like, no restrictions, weight or otherwise.
- You can post as many times as you want with different rifles or to try and beat your previous score with the same rifle.
- This is a friendly event run on the honor system (no cheating please).

Example:

This example target measures 3.335" outside to outside group diameter.
Subtract the bullet diameter -.308
= 3.027"

Conditions: Heavy rain, 11 deg C.
Calibre: .308 Win
Rifle: AI AW
Position: Prone, bipod.
Distance: 300 yards.

Although close, 3.027" just misses the mark set for this challenge as the group must be less than 3".

Ill play, haven't been shooting my DT since the island, as all my reloading gear is still packed away.

This is good fun , just reserving a spot and now I put my first attempt below .i will try to fill this spot with the next gun I try
Nov 22- Well I tried and failed with my ctr in 308 I'll be back
Nov 24-tried and failed again this time with ctr in 260 but I learned these ctr do better w/3 warm up shots ( I hope that's what's happening anyway )
Dec 1 Ctr 260 failed again and I warmed it up this time - but 7 were in 11/2 " 2 in 21/2 and one was outside the 3" goal by an inch , I guess I'll go for the most admitted failed attempts record . I'll be back !

Dec 15 well I did it with the 308 ctr w/165gr hornady match 2.949 centre to centre , the paper ripped up and one shot went in the rip and my sticker fell off the centre but just shows another bullet mark on the edge of the whole . This was sitting at bench off tire tube sand bags @ -15c no wind
Sticker didn't stick in the cold and my back board had a hole blow out in it , but I did it finally ,maybe bipod was flexing on prior attempts ?

Bought a rifle to build up so I can get on this board. Will still be a couple months from shooting the 300 yard group. Only have the rifle and B&C stock ordered, still need bases, rings, scope, trigger ect....

1 moa at 300 on the precision forum?

The old thread for this was in the precision rifle forum. If guys would rather have it in the black and green PR forum it's all good.

For most guys 10 rounds is not that easy, plenty of opportunity for flyers. Now if we're talking an F-open rifle with a seasoned shooter then maybe it's easy (I've never seen such a rifle or been to an F class match so I can't say). Either way participation is encouraged. I'm not putting in any equipment limits in order to get more guys out shooting this. 1 moa gets you in the game and goes from there.

I figure once this gets going the field will spread out between the F class guys, the FTR guys, the tactical shooters, hunters ect. The idea behind it is to try and shoot a personal best with what you have.

My initial response was not the greatest, sorry about that.

Cheers,

J.

Well first attempt is good there is staple holes I never thought of it started to rain so I ripped the target off if it disqualified me I'll post anyway as a caution to others. This was from cold bbl no warm ups

Sako 75 HB in 7mm rem mag -thanks " A Shultz"
168 gr chinchaga over 66.6 imr 7828
2 degrees slight gusts maybe 5mph right to left on target
Sitting on movable bench with bipod and bag
2.665
- .284
=2.381 divide by 3 is .793 MOA

Vertical is 1.723 - .284= 1.439 divided by 3 is .48 MOA

Nice shooting Keithjohn. I can see they are staple holes so all good, you are in the lead.

I'll do this properly at 300 when I get a chance but here is the closest I have for now:

Shot prone with a Harris bipod and rear bag @ 870 yards with a 20" barrelled Rem 700 in .308. 1.16 MOA, not quite there but not bad considering :)

This spot saved for later.

My personal goal will be to shoot this under 2 inches. My example target has 7 rounds clustered into 1.6" so I know the rifle and ammo are capable. This might take me a while though.

Update Nov7: Went out in the rain again today and shot a bit tighter overall than last time.

2.990 outside to outisde.
-.308
= 2.682

Conditions: Medium rain, light wind, 13 deg C.
Calibre: .308 Win
Rifle: AI AW with S&B 3-12
Position: Prone, bipod.
Range: 300 yards.

I have some ideas in mind how to better include all types of precision shooters in this challenge.

I was thinking of doing away with the 1 moa part and replacing the current successful list with three columns:

- Successfully shot under 1"
- Successfully shot under 2"
- Successfully shot under 3"

Is 1" a realistic 10 round challenge for a BR shooter at 300 yards?

I am clueless about the BR world.

Let me know your thoughts

Solid effort Keithjohn, keep it up. I will put on my raincoat this weekend and hit the range as well.

I like this ,
I'm getting most in 1/2 moa after my group stabilizes and quits stringing with the guns I've tried . I have work to do on my handloads ,shooting form or somthing . It's not as easy as I thought after my 1st attempt with my Sako .

I actually shot this getting ready for the challenge at Blenheim /Cedar Springs I believe in 2013 when it was first started. New gun so I was keen to try.

I shot at 350 m figuring if I could do 10 inside a 3" circle at 350m I'd have no trouble at 300 yds. Sadly I didn't get to attend that year

Forgot to add gun in case anyone was interested.... Stock Savage Mod 10 FCPK in 223 with brake removed and thread protector in place.

Shot this AM at 300M. -4C and calm / 30BR / Barnard action / Sako varmint stock.
