The 10 rounds @ 300 yards cgn online challenge.

I did this challenge about 4 years ago, I'm in the original thread where I went to the range and shot

I did it with a rem700 stock barrel and hand loads. In .223.

Since the. I re barrelled my gun and it now shoots in the .3's at 300m, Sunday is supposed to be calm I'll shoot some 10 shot groups to reapply

Got this done today on my first attempt; my first successfully completed CGN challenge!

03/12/2016, +2C, 10km/h Gusts
Remington 700 SPS-V .223 in B&C M40 Stock (factory barrel & trigger)
Caldwell Rock Benchrest

Nice shooting Alpheus and thenerdboy.

Alpheus can you tell me the make of the rifles you used?

Decided to try with a rifle with a heavier barrel so went to my heaviest rig which comes in close to 13 lbs scoped. Still no luck with my goal of sub 1" ten shot group at 300, but I am encouraged as 9 of 10 are generally pretty close. The wind got me on the middle target and it was so damned cold I couldn't manage a second group. Shot the bottom two targets this morning at -7C and started getting a bit of issue with mirage from barrel heat. Got so flustered I put 11 in one target and only 9 in the next:)

That is impressive!

I just finished the challenge but my photobucket has decided every time I try and upload a picture it wants me to log in, over and over

What is another good hosting site? Photobucket can go kick rocks

Marshman, great job. I'm determined to get to that happy spot but with forecasts predicting highs in the -20's for the next 10 days there is no way I will even try.

Bah what the heck, shot this eve @ 300yds .292 moa

That is an amazing group Marshman. If I blow the pic up I can make out 1.153" is that correct?
Also what is the bullet diameter of that cartridge? It looks like you shot under 1" once that gets subtracted. Amazing shooting.

Marshman - unreal shooting, very impressive!

J996 - I wanted to share some thoughts on the way this challenge is organized. Hoping you'll take a moment to consider my thoughts and how we might improve it as others join in the fun.

1. Can we change the range to 300m? Keeping all existing entries fired at 300 yards, of course. As far as I know, most of the ranges around here are setup in metric as are many of the others that I see/read about on CGN.
2. Barring #1, can the benchmarks be stated in MOA instead of inches? This way, metric shooters are not disadvantaged by the challenge.
- Consider benchmarks/targets such as: groups under 1MOA, groups under 2/3 or 1/2MOA and groups under 1/3 or 1/4MOA.
- There are already entries in all of these categories, with Marshman nearly breaking 1/4MOA as 1.047" = 1MOA @ 100 yards (his grouping is actually 0.278MOA).
- This provides a much more useful data set that can be easily analyzed. E.g., "To break 2/3MOA, one would need a custom target barrel."
- This would allow people to shoot at whatever "close to 300yd/m" range they have access to and keep the list organized (it would look a little different if organized by MOA).
- A free MOA calculator is located here: http://www.indecorous.com/bullseye/moacalc.html

I really enjoyed shooting this challenge and look forward to getting out to try it again with some different loads. Cheers!

For those interested, here is the current leaderboard organized in MOA instead of inches. This compares all the groups equally.

Under 1/3MOA:

Marshman 27X57AI Custom Barnard .876" (300 yards, 0.278MOA)

Under 2/3MOA:

RickF .260 Rem Custom Barnard 1.20" (300 meters, 0.349MOA)
JEC 30BR Custom Barnard 1.415" (300 meters, 0.412MOA)
Alpheus .284 Shehane Custom Stiller 1.804" (300 meters, 0.525MOA)
dbcdm12 6.5X47 Custom Savage 2.086" (300 meters, 0.607MOA)
Skypilot .223 Rem Savage 10 FCPK 2.499" (350 meters, 0.624MOA)

Under 1MOA:

Alpheus 6X47 Lapua Custom Rem700 2.501" (300 meters, 0.728MOA)
thenerdboy .223 Rem, Rem 700 SPS-V 2.602" (300 meters, 0.757MOA)
Keithjohn 7mm Rem mag Sako 75 HB 2.381" (300 yards, 0.758MOA)
J996 .308 Win AIAW 2.682" (300 meters, 0.781MOA)
Tikka223 6.5 Creedmoor Cadex CDX30 2.760" (300 meters, 0.803MOA)
Daver_II .308 Win Rem 700, Cadex chassis 2.868" (Assume 300 meters, 0.835MOA)
bsand .308 Win DTA SRS 2.713" (300 yards, 0.864MOA)

I would also propose that we limit entries on the leaderboard to one per rifle. Feel free to shoot again and your best result will be listed on the board. It's bound to get cluttered as more people get out to complete the challenge.

How is this useful? For example, of the 13 shooters to date, only one has broken 2/3MOA with a factory barrel.

1. With regard to the meters vs yards, alot of ranges in Canada especially smaller rural ones are in yards. If your range is 300 meters you can set up at 275 meters if you want to. The smaller 300 yard ranges can only go to 300 yards.

2. Once we get into listing third moa things become a bit oddball. I would prefer to keep this to group size only as it is easier to organize and I am the one listing it.

The distance to be shot is clearly defined (300 yards in meters is between 274/275 meters).

J996 - Thanks for your response.

The other issue I was trying to avoid was the necessity of a rangefinder to setup at a closer distance. 84 feet between 300m and 300yd is over 3 tape lengths if I take a standard measuring tape and the range is already covered in snow. The intent of listed group sizes seems to be MOA, 2/3MOA and 1/3MOA - if that sounds funny, you could just use MOA, 1/2 and 1/4. I would suggest changing the thread title if MOA measurements are not going to be used (3" 10rds @ 300yards Challenge).

Maybe metric shooters could scale down their group sizes mathematically to 300yards? You could ask posters to report their result in MOA - many have already done so anyway.

Food for thought - thanks for your consideration.

So does this have to be shot at a legit range,or can it be done on a private shooting range.
And should I take pics from shooting position to target or is this on the honour system completely?
Cool idea.
