Fill up with black epoxy, sand down to stock, veneer over entire cheek piece, sand down again, refinish.
This is actually the best alternative I've heard yet. Although it would be difficult to get a veneer the same colour tone as the rest of the stock. Although it could be done... Straight black stain would look decent.
I'm still going to try the clear epoxy over the badge first though. It seems easier and doesn't require refinishing the whole stock. But if it looks like shart I might go this route.
