Hey y'all, just got my first ar15 in a trade on cgn. It is a 16" bushmaster xm15es2 with a keymod rail. The previous owner had put about 500 rounds through it. So I took it to the range with 5 different magazines and 3 different types of ammo. Over the course of the day I had multiple issues. With the 55 grain ammo it would cycle but would not hold open when empty. Using the 62 grain ammo it would always eject a spent casing but never load a new one in. It essentially became a bolt action that I had to rack after every round. Using different mags made no difference, although the norinco mag straight up didnt fit. The gun was extremely accurate though blowing a hole the size of a nickel out at 50 meters with my eotech. Anyways, Im wondering if I am missing something or doing something wrong as this is my first ar and have had basically no experience with one before. I know I am seating the mag fully so that isnt an issue. I checked the bolt and it seams to be in good condition. Any insight from someone who has experience with AR's would be appreciated!

lube the bolt carrier group, especially the inside. check that the gas block isn't leaking (look for soot on barrel) or loose and then check the gas key hasn't come loose on the BCG(same issue as gas block). make sure the gas tube isn't misaligned or worn. check the condition of the gas rings on the bolt and do a ring test ( strip the bolt, then put bolt into the carrier and see if the bolt can fall free on its own with gravity pulling on it. it should be snug , but not hard to move with by hand. start with those items.

Check for leaks like Barsik points out similar to one of mine which had a poor fit with this gas block. The block may have moved and become out of alignment with the port.

Lube the BCG following a good cleaning. It has a low round count so it may only need to be tuned with the correct buffer weight or spring.

Strip it, lube it and try again.
If that does not work then Barsik pretty much covered it.
Do not start changing parts, as long as it wasn't messed with by the previous owner it should be set up correctly from factory and 500 rounds is not enough to wear anything out.
My guess is that it just needs a little oil.

Thanks all for the help! Ive stripped it and lubed it up pretty well, the inner parts of the bolt were pretty dirty. There seemed to be a small leak at the gas block not quite as much as yours Sqr but there was some residue there.

Most gas blocks have a slight leak that do not cause issues. I made a mistake on purchasing a bargain model for this build.

As pointed out undertake a good stripping and cleaning followed by a good lube job.

Just to put everybody on the same page, jebnert you do not appear to have a failure to feed issue, your rifle is short stroking. That is why all the responses are focused on inspecting your gas system rather than magazines (which are almost always the culprit in failure to feed scenarios).

Yeap. Check these things.
