Ruger Mini-14 accuracy

not sure we'd be having this conversation if we were allowed to hunt with AR's ...

You're not? I hunted with an HBAR Colt AR15 extensively back in the day. I just had to have it for the cool factor, but it didn't take long to realize that my Mini was far more pleasant and comfortable to carry and hunt with. Accuracy was acceptable out-of-the-box, and tweaking to improve it significantly was easy and cheap.

You think an AR would be great as a hunter, just as many guys today are shelling out big bucks for Modern Hunters and other AR-type non-restricted rifles for hunting. Aside from the fact that they could get superior accuracy, equal or better reliability and more ergonomic carrying and handling with almost any other hunting rifle, those guns are great. I'm thinking I will design and market a picatinny-mounted cantilevered arm that holds a mirror, allowing you to see how cool you look as you stalk through the brush with your 10lb semi and its 12-inch-long 5-round magazine. I'll make a fortune! :)

I'll probably get another Mini or two with the proceeds. :)

Heavy? Yes it made to resemble the M14

Expensive? Try buying a non-restricted semi auto 5.56/.223 in this country for less that doesn't have a plastic receiver...

Shotgun pattern? You should read through the thread and stop spreading misinformation because they group as well or better than most non-restricted semi auto 5.56 available in this country.

Underpowered? How is it underpowered? This confuses me...

The only valid complaint that holds water against the Mini-14 is the price of 20/5 magazines which is completely unacceptable. Ruger could fix this but they outright refuse to.

I too am confused ??

Look ,I have a Mini and love the damn thing ,eats everything I put in it (a little hard on brass mind you, but I don`t reload, so no biggie)

I put a GG&G rail on it and a red dot, it`s a hoot to shoot !!

If I want something sub MOA, I`ll choose another rifle for that. When I want un-restricted fun in the gravel pits....the Mini14 does it for me (well SKS too....but that topic may start some real HATE..LOL)

cheers

PT

Your snotty BS aside .....

Has nothing to do with lookin' cool. I've carried an AR a lot. It's a far superior format on just about every point except the restricted part.... and that's a POS government issue, not a firearm issue.

Are you a hunter or do you usually hang out at in the Black Rifle Forum? Not sure how the AR makes a superior hunting rifle, is it a much better rifle for a LEO or the military, sure but for hunting I just don't see how it is so much better? Maybe you and I a lot differently?

On a per dollar basis the Mini wins.
A sub thousand dollar stock AR will not out shoot a mini and definitely will not last as long.
I hunted with an AR before C68 and it was fine.. not sure if it's better tho

Well, political or not, the restricted part is a huge issue for most people, so it can't be ignored.

But even putting that aside, I have hunted a lot with the AR. Putting it down and picking up a Mini, or any traditionally stocked rifle, was a breath of fresh air. If it's not about "lookin' cool", what is it about? Why is everybody buying 5/20 and 5/30 mags? I've seen them used as supports for prone shooting; that's not something you get to do a lot when hunting, and it's usually easy to find a natural rest when you do. Otherwise, why deal with an extended useless square thing jutting out into your back, or snagging on every passing bush? Why contend with the exaggerated trajectory of a high sight-line? For a hunter, where is the superiority?

Nothing wrong with dressing up in buckskins and going out to take a deer with a traditional front-stuffer...but it seems silly to suggest that it's a superior method for shooting deer. It's done for fun...and looking cool is part of the fun. Why get so cranky when someone observes that hunting with an AR falls into a similar category, i.e. a little more limiting and uncomfortable and effort-intensive due to using a gun designed for combat rather than for hunting? Is it a sin to admit you do it for fun? (and/or to look cool?)

What? You need to get one of these little guns. When you do, make sure that you test fire it thoroughly before you start adding plumbing fixtures and other assorted hardware to the barrel; you might be pleasantly surprised by how well it shoots. Yes, yes, I'm talking about the newer gen guns, with the tapered section just forward of the gasblock...thought I'd mention that before a hater starts howling again...:)

Just a quick suggestion: if you need or want to mod the gun to improve accuracy, I have had excellent success with the Limbsaver rubber-donut accurizer thingie on my Mini Target. You can get these things cheap, under $20, and when you slide it onto the barrel it allows for "tuning" similar to the factory barrel tuner on the Target model, but without all that extra weight. Well worth a try.

as illustrated by the bottom rifle in the pic I posted. A newer 58x model.

bickering aside gents, different strokes for different folks.

I'm generally a lever action type but I love em all!

I am a big mini fan and own a 30 and 14 which I feel are the best of the available NR rifle selection, however IMO the AR is far superior to the Ruger.

Ewww, :)
All joking aside, I there with ya. I love them all but have way more fun with a certain bolt .223 right now. Mini is a dust collector for now... But never too long.

Did you order the apeture kit for it as well?? Totally worth it. Also thin the blade sight down from .085ish to .050 and shooting gets real fun.

No I haven't got it yet. The Tech Sight one for the 581 series has the 0.061 Aperture peep. I don't mine the stock peep sight or vertical adjustment by rotating it, it's the damned windage adjustments! You lose zero completely if you want to adjust left or right. Then you can't adjust up or down without backing out BOTH screws and completely losing windage zero again. Gah!! What the hell were they thinking!?
I'm working on getting her imported through a dealer. Just waiting on pricing now. Should have her in the new year as they wont ship them out of the US to Canada.
I still don't understand how Tech Sights considers an aftermarket iron sight for a commercial ranch rifle as "Tech Defense" under ITAR regulations there but anyhow lol

Of course the AR is superior. It's superior to every single Non Restricted black rifle in this country by a mile. The only reason we have these conversations and get bent over tables by dealers for overpriced inferiority is simply because of our ridiculous laws :(
That being said I've settled on the mini14 after owning almost all others as best bang for buck by a mile as well. I would sell it in a heart beat too though if I could take my A1 clone out into the bush like we all should be able to.

Firing this rifle is a lot of fun, chasing brass isn't. The solution :) -

I am going to have to look into that. How do you find your cheek weld with the scope? I just put a 1.5-4 on mine and find the scope to be very high, the stock is resting just about on the bottom of my jaw.

No issues with my Mini-14 being scoped. I had a Bushnell Banner 1.5-4x20mm scope on this rifle and found it to be a bit high off the receiver. I suspect ejected brass will hit the scope if lower height rings were to be installed.
