Heavy? Yes it made to resemble the M14
Expensive? Try buying a non-restricted semi auto 5.56/.223 in this country for less that doesn't have a plastic receiver...
Shotgun pattern? You should read through the thread and stop spreading misinformation because they group as well or better than most non-restricted semi auto 5.56 available in this country.
Underpowered? How is it underpowered? This confuses me...
The only valid complaint that holds water against the Mini-14 is the price of 20/5 magazines which is completely unacceptable. Ruger could fix this but they outright refuse to.
Guy's can hunt with AR's in the states and yet people still like and use the Mini.
You're not? I hunted with an HBAR Colt AR15 extensively back in the day. I just had to have it for the cool factor, but it didn't take long to realize that my Mini was far more pleasant and comfortable to carry and hunt with. Accuracy was acceptable out-of-the-box, and tweaking to improve it significantly was easy and cheap.
You think an AR would be great as a hunter, just as many guys today are shelling out big bucks for Modern Hunters and other AR-type non-restricted rifles for hunting. Aside from the fact that they could get superior accuracy, equal or better reliability and more ergonomic carrying and handling with almost any other hunting rifle, those guns are great. I'm thinking I will design and market a picatinny-mounted cantilevered arm that holds a mirror, allowing you to see how cool you look as you stalk through the brush with your 10lb semi and its 12-inch-long 5-round magazine. I'll make a fortune!![]()
I'll probably get another Mini or two with the proceeds.![]()
Your snotty BS aside .....
Has nothing to do with lookin' cool. I've carried an AR a lot. It's a far superior format on just about every point except the restricted part.... and that's a POS government issue, not a firearm issue.

What? You need to get one of these little guns. When you do, make sure that you test fire it thoroughly before you start adding plumbing fixtures and other assorted hardware to the barrel; you might be pleasantly surprised by how well it shoots. Yes, yes, I'm talking about the newer gen guns, with the tapered section just forward of the gasblock...thought I'd mention that before a hater starts howling again...
Just a quick suggestion: if you need or want to mod the gun to improve accuracy, I have had excellent success with the Limbsaver rubber-donut accurizer thingie on my Mini Target. You can get these things cheap, under $20, and when you slide it onto the barrel it allows for "tuning" similar to the factory barrel tuner on the Target model, but without all that extra weight. Well worth a try.

Ewww,as illustrated by the bottom rifle in the pic I posted. A newer 58x model.
bickering aside gents, different strokes for different folks.
I'm generally a lever action type but I love em all!
Did you order the apeture kit for it as well?? Totally worth it. Also thin the blade sight down from .085ish to .050 and shooting gets real fun.
I am a big mini fan and own a 30 and 14 which I feel are the best of the available NR rifle selection, however IMO the AR is far superior to the Ruger.
