Bought a Weatherby Vanguard 2 in .257 Wby Mag on sale at Cabelas and needed a new scope for this flat shooting caliber. I have a 3X9 Leopold II on my 30-06 but thought more magnification would be better. Looked through all the higher power scopes including the Vortex, Nikon and Leopold scopes. Although my evaluation was subjective, I ended up choosing the Cabela Covenant 4X16 Tactical Scope. To my eye, it was brighter, clearer and the side focus with First Objective Recticle with MOA etchings was what I was looking for in a medium priced scope. So far, I have fired approximately 60 rounds through the rifle and it has passed the square test, (up 4 clicks, left 4, down 4, right 4. Best group so far measured .315 in and zero has not changed. Don't know who makes this scope but, (since even Leopold gets their lenses from China,) I am very pleased with the scope even if it is made in Asia.

I almost bought one of those the other day but I didnt because I was unsure if it would hold up or not. I was also impressed with the clarity of the scope.

Sorry to say that I took my Covenant 4-16 scope back to Cavela's for a refund. Although the scope was very accurate and repeatable, the reticle was too fine to see well on a regular black target at 200 yds. They just disappeared against a dark background. Took it out this morning and sighted on a dark colored building just before sunrise and couldn't make out the reticle markings. I guess if all your targets and animals are white, (polar bears?), the scope would work fine but not for my applications. Sorry if my earlier review has led any of you astray. Cavela's was very accommodating and refunded the price of the scope and 30mm rings with no problem. Ended up buying Nikon Prostaff 5 - 3.5-14 x 40mm with the BDC reticle.

Wouldn't this be a problem with any fine reticle optic? Or is the Covenant's reticle hair thin?

Cheers
Jay

Not really familiar with any other tactical reticles. If the reticle had four posts it would help. The Covenant has no top post so when I was unable to clearly make out the christmas tree lines I was not able to guesstimate the centre of the display. At less than 8 power, the reticle was much more visable than at full power. Probably a function of a First Focal Plane scope.

I looked through one today at the store. Fine reticle without illumination. @$449 for an FFP something has to give features wise. 2 month money back for any reason. Limited lifetime for original owner if it fails on rifle. Negligent damage not covered. @max mag the FFP version loses sight of the bottom 1/3 of the reticle tree. Not sure if this is common, I don't have any FFP optics, let alone higher end stuff.

Passed up this opportunity mainly because I was ticked......the FFP sells for $200 US at Cavelas in the states but sale price here is $450 CDN.....the economics escape me so I won't commit.

It'd depend on the mag range of the scope and the size of the reticle...but yeah, with FFP if you zoom in enough you're going to start cutting off parts of the reticle.

I was looking at one of these today and was considering it for plinking with my .22. I'm going to think on it a bit longer, perhaps I should just stick with what I know....

Im glad you enjoy the scope and it works for you. I have a few cabelas scopes too and like them as well. They hold zero good, and have decent lenses.

I just tried this scope on a 338 Lapua (yes you read that correctly), mainly because the warranty, and so far it hasn't crapped the bed. grouping well, holding zero. I can't complain. let you guys know if fails on me.

So what is the warranty on these scopes ? I looked at it but until there is more positive feedback, decided against it. My thing is reliable tracking up to 700 or 800 yards after 500+ shots. Don't take me wrong, I like saving money, we all do, but I just don't see $250-$300 scope doing what I need it to do, clarity is a beautiful thing but if you miss the target because of poor tracking, it misses the point and is expensive in ammo. The other thing is , does anyone know who actually makes these scopes ?

hoping to keep this thread alive. I almost pulled the trigger on one of these over the weekend to put on top of a BCL-102. Have a Vortex Viper HS-T on my 223 that I may move over to the 308, but at the moment can't decide if I swap the scopes around assuming I get a Covenant or use the covenant on the 308. For the money, and only looking at specs the Covenant seems decent but won't stack up to something the caliber of the HST I don't think. I'm a "beginner" in range shooting and theres a possibility I'll take the 308 out for Deer. Thoughts guys?
